Penny was only five, and while she didn’t like Amelia, it just didn’t make sense for her to come up with a lie like this, let alone try to set Amelia up on purpose.
Clive replayed the last few days in his mind—Amelia’s weird, out-of-character moments since she woke up. Doubt started creeping in.
Caroline, of course, saw right through her brother’s hesitation.
She’d been the Salmeron family’s spoiled princess her whole life, and her temper was legendary. Now she was in no mood to back down. “Clive, Penny’s already said everything herself, but you’re still siding with Amelia?” Caroline snapped. “That woman is nothing but a gold-digger! My diamond bracelet was a birthday gift from Dad last year—custom made, over three million! Amelia was just a broke doctor before marrying into our family. She never would’ve touched real jewelry if it wasn’t for us.”
Her voice turned cold. “If I find my bracelet on her, I’m calling the cops. She can rot in jail for ten years, for all I care.”
“Caroline!” Clive’s tone was sharp. “Amelia is still your sister-in-law.”
“As if someone like her deserves that title!”
Penny, curled up on Clive’s lap, heard Caroline threaten to call the police. She immediately panicked, her little hands clutching at Clive’s shirt.
What was she supposed to do now? She only wanted her aunt to scold that woman, not have the police take her away, let alone lock her up for years. Penny bit her lip, anxiety knotting in her chest. For the first time, she realized she might’ve really messed up.
Only Timmy noticed Penny’s panic. They were twins, after all. Sometimes it felt like they could read each other’s minds. He instantly sensed something was wrong.
Timmy put down his tablet and, while the adults argued, slipped quietly upstairs, heading straight for Aunt Caroline’s room.
He remembered how Caroline had once streamed herself playing a new game for her company, and let him join in. She’d even set up a special camera in the corner.
He spotted it right away—a stuffed animal with a tiny blinking red light. Still recording.
It was aimed directly at the bathroom door. Maybe it had caught something important.
Timmy quickly opened Caroline’s laptop, his face serious, fingers moving fast as he searched for the footage.
