Today, she was set on teaching her daughter a real lesson.
Lying and stealing were already bad enough, but refusing to admit it? That just made everything worse.
Amelia took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, and—right there in front of everyone—unzipped her bag. She turned it upside down, letting everything tumble out onto the table. And there it was, impossible to miss: the sparkling diamond bracelet.
Tara clapped a hand over her mouth, eyes wide in shock. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
Did Mrs. Salmeron really steal the diamond bracelet?
Caroline looked completely smug—like she’d known this would happen all along. She crossed her arms and tipped her chin up. “Well, there you have it. Caught in the act, Amelia. What are you going to say now?”
Amelia stood tall, her back straight and her whole presence quietly commanding. “I’m not confessing to something I didn’t do,” she said, her voice calm and steady. “Go ahead, call the police. Have them check for fingerprints on that bracelet. Let’s see if mine are even there.”
Fingerprints?
Penny’s stomach dropped.
She knew what fingerprints were—her older brother had explained that everyone’s were different, and if you touched something, you’d leave a mark.
So… on her aunt’s diamond bracelet, there wouldn’t be any of the “bad woman” Amelia’s prints. Only hers.
Amelia caught the flicker of fear on Penny’s small face. For a split second, her heart softened.
She hated scaring her daughter—no mother would ever want that. But if Penny never faced the consequences of what she’d done, she’d never learn.
