Chapter 26
His smile widened. “Which is why I’d like you to be our primary liaison for this project moving forward.

The opportunity was too good to pass up. Yet something nagged at me–why was Roberto so insistent on working with me specifically?
Is this because of my connection to Marco? Or something else entirely?
I refocused on Roberto’s explanation, nodding at appropriate intervals while carefully storing away every detail for later analysis.
The meeting ran longer than expected. By the time I left the Scorpione Group building, the sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. I checked my phone to find three missed calls from Francesca and a text that simply read: CALL ME ASAP! HUGE NEWS!!!
I smiled, dialing her number as I walked toward the bus stop.
“Finally!” she exclaimed when she answered. “Where have you been? Never mind, doesn’t matter. Can you come to the studio? Right now?”
“Then I’ll go home first to get some clothes,” I replied, “I can stay at your place tonight..
Her enthusiasm made me laugh. “I’ll be there soon. Don’t explode from excitement before I arrive.”
Promessa Eterna, was a small but elegant space in the artistic district. When I arrived, the lights were still on, and I could see her bouncing excitedly behind the counter.
“There you are!” she exclaimed, “I’ve been dying to tell you all day!”
“Tell me what?” I laughed, “You look like you’re about to burst.”
Francesca grabbed both my hands, her eyes sparkling. “My sweetheart just got his doctorate in business management!”

“That’s your Portuguese boyfriend, Maude Rich? That’s great!” I squeezed her hand.
That’s not all,” she continued, practically vibrating with excitement. “He’s been offered a position at the Falco Nero Group!”
Falco Nero was one of the most powerful business conglomerates in Europe and Asia.
“And there’s more,” Francesca continued, “There are rumors that Falco Nero is moving their headquarters from Monterano to Portano! If that happens, Morde could transfer back here!”
“That’s… incredible!” I’m happy for her.
I said sincerely. “And you know if you need to go to Portugal to be with him, I can handle things at the studio.”
Her eyes widened. “You’d do that for me?”
“Of course. What are friends for? If anything happens at the studio while you’re gone, I’ll take care of it. Go be with your sweetheart.”
Francesca threw her arms around me, squeezing tight. “You’re the best, Alia. Seriously
‘Let’s celebrate,” I suggested. “That famous/steakhouse around the corner is still open. My treat.”

Chapter 26
We were halfway through our meal at Fili’s Steakhouse when my phone rang. Marco’s name flashed on the screen, and I felt my face heat to in
“Hey,” I said, aware of Francesca watching me curiously.
Don’t you have something to say to me? Marco’s voice was cool, controlled.
My mind raced, trying to figure out what I’d forgotten. “Um… you should remember to eat dinner? And take care of yourself?”
A beat of silence. ‘Is that all?”
I wracked my brain, coming up empty. “Thank you?” I ventured, remembering Camila’s sudden dismissal.
The line went quiet for a moment. Then, “Goodnight, Alia, Marco said flatly before hanging up.
I stared at my phone, bewildered.
Francesca raised an eyebrow. “You’ve been flash–married for what, a month now? And you two still talk to each other like awkward strangers?”
My cheeks burned. “We’re… still getting to know each other.”
She pressed, leaning forward with a mischievous glint in her eye. “Have you two…?”
My blush deepened as I nodded slightly.
“And?” she prompted.
“And he’s… always careful,” I mumbled, unable to meet her eyes. “Always uses protection.”
