Chapter 27
Alia POV
I staring at the ceiling of our bedroom in the Casanova Residence. Today is the third day of Marco’s business trip to Altoria.
The bed felt too large without Marco.
Lola, snuggled closer against my side, sensing my melancholy. I scratched behind her ears, grateful for her warm presence.
“At least you love me unconditionally, don’t
my girl?” I whispered.
Three years ago, when I’d escaped from the Castro Family’s clutches, Lola had been my salvation–a wounded stray I’d found huddled in an alley. We’d healed together, two broken souls finding comfort in each other’s company.
‘Your phone’s been ringing, Tina mentioned as she passed my desk, eyebrows raised. “Like, a lot.”
I blinked, “What? Oh–thanks.”
Grabbing my phone from my purse, I saw three missed calls from Marco. He never called multiple times unless something was wrong.
I quickly stepped into the empty break room and returned his call, heart racing slightly.
The line connected, but Marco remained silent. I checked to make sure the call hadn’t dropped.
“Marco? Are you there?”
After what felt like an eternity, he finally spoke. “I just wanted to call my wife,” His voice was low, “Is that not allowed?”
“Of course it is,” I replied, confused by his coldness. “I just missed your calls. I was working.”
Another pause.
“Marco, wait–are you okay? When are you coming home?”
‘I’m already home, he said simply before hanging up.
I stared at my phone, dumbfounded. Already home? Since when?
Luca Ferrari is reporting on various tasks regarding the new headquarters building of the Falco Nero family.
“The Portano headquarters building will be completed ahead of schedule,” Luca was saying. “The contractors have exceeded expectations.”
Marco nodded absently, turning the Black Hawk emblem cufflink between his fingers. The small obsidian hawk caught the light as he rotated it, its ruby eyes seeming to watch him.
‘Sir? Luca asked, noticing his distraction.
Marco was about to respond when he overheard a conversation from the hallway outside his office.
-Last time the boss attended an event, I lost five hundred euros–
–It’s all because his secretary Alia bet that he wouldn’t attend–

Marco’s head snapped up, his eyes narrowing. “What was that about five hundred euros and Alia?
Luca hesitated, “It’s nothing, sit. Just office gossip.”
“Explain, Marco demanded.
“The last time there was a celebration, they made a friendly bet in the office, Luca admitted, betting whether you would attend the Phantera Game Bidding celebration. And Alia bet with people that you wouldn’t come.”
Marco’s expression darkened.
In the evening while preparing dinner, I only made two and a half portions of pasta, because Marco said he was home, but I didn’t see him when I came back.
I stirred the sauce while Lola hopefully circled around my feet, and occasionally a small piece of cheese would fall down for her to snatch up.
The apartment door opened and closed with a decisive click.
1 froze, spoon in hand. Marco?
He appeared in the kitchen doorway, his impeccable navy suit, his expression unreadable behind those white–gold framed glasses.
His gaze swept over the two portions of pasta and cutlery
on the counter, finally landing on Lola, who had already started barking excitedly at him.
Marco’s gaze flicked from Lola back to me. Without a word, he turned and walked toward our bedroom.
Lola continued barking, running circles around his legs. Marco stopped, looking down at the small dog with such displeasure that I quickly scooped her up.
“Lola, shh,” I whispered.
Marco’s jaw tightened before he continued to the bedroom, closing the door behind him with controlled precision.
An hour later, Marco emerged from the bathroom, hair damp from his shower. Without acknowledging me, he walked straight to his study and locked the door behind him.
Lola whined softly from her cushion in the living room, sensing the tension. I sat beside her, stroking her soft fur thoughtfully.
“He doesn’t like you, does he?” I whispered. “I’ll take you to Francesca’s tomorrow.
If Marco had told me before we married that he didn’t want pets, would I still have said yes?
The next morning, I was packing Lola’s toys and food into a bag when Marco appeared in the living room doorway. He looked immaculate as always in a charcoal suit, not a hair out of place despite having slept in his study.
‘Morning.” I greeted him softly.
I blinked, confused by the non sequitur. “What?”
Marco reached into his suit jacket and withdrew a sleek black card. He held it out to me between two fingers.
“This is my personal account. The PIN is 123321. Buy whatever you want, just swipe this card.”
I stared at the card. It was matte black with the subtle outline of a hawk embossed on one side. No bank name, no numbers–just a chip and the hawk.
“What is this?

“A Black Hawk Family diamond card. No spending limit.”
My eyes widened.
I looked from the card to Lola’s bag, and I misunderstood his intention. I’m not selling Lola for money,‘ I said, my voice hardening. Not for any amount
Marco’s eyebrows rose slightly, the first change in his expression since he’d entered the room.
I continued, standing straighter. “I won’t give her up. She’s family to me.”
