Chapter 37

Aria’s POV

I opened my eyes as morning light filtered through the curtains.

Marco was already awake, leaning against the headboard with a tablet in his hands. He wore goldrimmed glasses that somehow made him look both more intellectual and more attractive.

Marco glanced down at p

and set the tablet aside. Did you sleep well?*

in a while.

Good. He reached out to brush a strand of hair from my face, the gesture casual yet intimate.

Neither of us mentioned yesterday’s events as we fell into our morning routine.

I showered while Marco made phone calls, then we met in the dining room where the chef had already prepared breakfast.

Will you be traveling this week?I asked, spreading butter on a slice of bread.

Marco shook his head slightly. Not this week.

I nodded, feeling a wave of uneasiness at the thought of being alone in the apartment.

A soft whimper caught my attention, and I looked down to see our fluffy Lola sitting on the floor, gazing at me with pleading eyes. Smiling, I passed her a small piece of bacon, which she accepted with an enthusiastic wag of her tail.

Come here, little one,I said softly, lifting her onto my lap. She immediately settled down, content to be petted while I ate my breakfast.

I noticed Marco watching us, his expression unreadable.

I couldn’t help but smile at the thought that Marco tolerated Lola for my sake. It was these small compromises that strengthened our relationship.

When it was time for work, I insisted we take separate cars to the office. I don’t want to create a bad impression for you, I explained, though I suspected office gossip was already buzzing after yesterday’s incident.

Marco didn’t argue, just nodded and placed a gentle kiss on my foreheadan increasingly natural gesture of intimacy between us.

At Cortés Tech, Marco walked through the lobby.

Colleagues straightened their posture, greeting him respectfully: Good morning, Mr. Vittorio.

Marco nodded to them, and after he entered the executive elevator, I overheard nearby conversations.

Did you see Mr. Vittorio’s Brioni suit today?a woman whispered. He wears clothes like they were designed specifically for him.

Never mind the suit, her colleague replied. Mr.Vittorio’s eyes could melt steel. I wonder what his wife is likehe never brings her to company events.

Probably some Italian socialite who spends money extravagantly but keeps a low profile, a third voice chimed in. Men like him always marry trophy

wives.

I bit my lip to keep from laughing. If only they knew that this trophy wifewas standing right beside them in an ordinary intern’s suit.

However, what surprised me most was that I heard nothing about yesterday’s incident at Red Scorpion Groupno rumors about me hitting someone or being

taken to the police station.

All morning i busied myself with administrative tasks. I couldn’t concentrate, my mind drifting to worries about Gabriel’s retaliation

I wasn’t concerned for myself, but for Marco. He had no idea how much danger he’d brought upon himself simply by retrieving me from the police

My phone buzzed with a message from Marco:

Focus on work. Remember lunch at the Ritz Hotel at noon.

The simple text sent a wave of warmth through me.

Before noon, my sense of security vanished when my colleague Tina burst into the office with a panicked expression.

Red Scorpion Group has canceled their partnership on Project Phantom, she announced to everyone, effective immediately!

A shocked murmur rippled through the office. Project Phantom was supposed to be Cortés Tech’s biggest project this year, with potential revenues in the millions.

Did they give a reason?someone asked.

Tina’s face twisted uncomfortably. They claimsomeone used improper relationships to secure the Phantom project. Specifically, they mentioned a female secretary from Cortés Tech.

Every head in the room turned toward me. My face burned hot as a cold dread washed over me. Gabriel’s retaliation had begunand this was likely just the beginning of the storm,

I stared fixedly at my computer screen, pretending to work while feeling the questioning gazes around me. Colleagues whispered, their voices too low for me to hear clearly, nor did I want to.

Later, when I was alone in the break room, Tina cornered me by the coffee machine.

Aria, she said in a low voice, what happened at Red Scorpion yesterday? They’re saying you were there.

I forced my expression to remain neutral, my hands steady as I stirred creamer into my coffee. Nothing unusual. I just submitted the project proposal as requested, then went home alone.

Tina still looked suspicious but didn’t press further. As she walked away, I leaned against the counter, trying to calm my racing heart.

Gabriel had made his move, and Marcowhat were we going to do?
