Chapter 243

Reven’s Pov

I woke up this morning feeling tired and my body sore, but I didn’t mind.

There were more important things to deal with than a little ache here and there. My mind was far too restless to care about how my body felt.

Today wasn’t just another day; it was the day I intended to start finding out who was behind the flowers that had been showing up mysteriously for weeks now.

Those flowers weren’t just ordinary gifts; they came with notes sweet, thoughtful, perfectly written notes that could easily shake the heart of any woman.

But the thing was, I wasn’t supposed to be receiving them. I had Derrick. I loved Derrick. And whoever was doing this was clearly trying to ruin that.

As I lay on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling, flashes of the previous days came rushing back. The scent of the last bouquet still lingered faintly in my room, that same intoxicating fragrance of fresh roses mixed with lavender.

I could still see the cream-colored note tied neatly around the stems, with those elegant, slanted handwriting

Those words replayed in my head like a curse.

Whoever was doing this knew how to make it personal, how to make it sound like someone who truly understood me. And that was exactly what scared me.

With a heavy sigh, I pushed myself off the bed, the coldness of the tiled floor meeting my bare feet. My hair was messy, my eyes slightly puffy from the lack of sleep. I dragged my feet toward the bathroom, trying to shake off the storm of emotions already swirling within me.

Turning on the shower, I stood there for a while as the sound of the water filled the silence. I didn’t step in right away; I just stood there, watching the steam rise, letting the mist touch my face.

My thoughts wouldn’t stop coming: images of Derick’s confused expression the last time he saw one of those bouquets, the tension that filled the air between us, the awkward silence at breakfast, and the way his eyes seemed to search mine for an answer I couldn’t give.

“This is breaking us,” I whispered to myself, pressing my palms against the cold sink. “And I can’t sit and watch things fall apart between us.”

The shower ran for a few minutes before I finally stepped under it, the warmth wrapping around me like a temporary comfort. I closed my eyes and let the water cascade down my skin, but it didn’t wash away the heaviness in my chest.

My heart ached with the thought that someone was deliberately trying to destroy what Derick and I had built together.

It wasn’t perfect, but it was ours.

And I wasn’t going to let anyone take that away from me.

When I was done bathing. I wrapped myself in a towel and went to the closet, pulling out my training outfit: black leggings, a fitted top, and my combat boots. I tied my hair up in a ponytail, wiped the fog from the mirror, and stared at my reflection.

“You can do this,” I told myself softly. “Just stay calm and keep your eyes open.”

Derick and I had training together this morning, something I always looked forward to. But today wasn’t just about training I was going to observe, watch everything and everyone. Sometimes, people revealed more than they intended when they thought no one was paying attention.

I hurried out of the room, my wolf restless within me. She wasn’t happy either.

We need to know who’s behind this, she murmured in my mind. It’s starting to smell like betrayal.

“I know,” I whispered back. “I’ll find out.”

The morning air was cool and crisp as I made my way to the training ground. The sound of warriors sparring echoed across the field, their grunts, and the clash of bodies filling the space with raw energy.

I looked around for Derick, expecting to see him already there, but he wasn’t.

Strange. Derick was never late for training.

I walked toward a quiet corner and sat down, stretching my legs and trying to calm my racing thoughts.

My eyes followed the movement of the warriors some sparring, others practicing combat forms but my mind wasn’t there. It was back in that room, on that note, on those flowers.

Just then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of a figure walking toward the edge of the woods behind the training ground.

I frowned, narrowing my gaze.

The person’s posture looked familiar-elegant but firm; the way she carried herself spoke of confidence and experience. Her long dark hair was tied up neatly, and even from behind, I could tell who it was.

Derick’s mother.

What was she doing heading into the woods this early?

She rarely came near the training ground, let alone ventured into the forest behind it. Something about the way she glanced around before walking deeper into the trees made my heart tighten. It was too cautious, too deliberate.

Curiosity and unease warred inside me.

My wolf stirred uneasily.

Follow her, she urged. You might find something.

I hesitated for a moment, glancing back toward the warriors. Derick still hadn’t arrived. That gave me a little window. Without thinking twice, I got up quietly and began to follow her at a safe distance, making sure to stay behind the trees and keep out of sight.

The forest was silent except for the rustle of leaves beneath my boots. The scent of pine and damp earth filled the air, and the deeper I went, the more uneasy I became.

I couldn’t see her anymore. She had moved faster than I thought.

1 quickened my pace, weaving through the trees, scanning the area for any sign of her. My pulse quickened. What if I was caught? What if she found out I was following her?

Just when I was about to give up and turn back, I heard voices.

A male voice. Deep, calm, but urgent.

And a woman’s voice, hers.

I froze, my heart pounding so loud I was afraid it would give me away. I crouched behind a thick oak tree, my body tense as I listened.

Their words were faint, carried by the breeze, but I could catch bits and pieces.

“…this has to stop soon,” the man said.

“You don’t understand,” she replied sharply. “It’s the only way to make him see she isn’t right for him.”

My stomach dropped.

Were they talking about me?

I leaned slightly to the side, peering carefully from behind the tree. Derick’s mother stood facing a tall man whose back was turned to me. I couldn’t see his face clearly, only his broad shoulders and dark hair.

In his hand, he held something.

A bouquet.

My breath caught.

A familiar arrangement of red and white roses, tied with the same ribbon, the same kind of flowers that kept showing up at the pack’s gate. My hands started to tremble.

So it was her. Derick’s mother was behind it, or at least, she was involved. And that man… who was he?

“Just one more time,” she was saying, lowering her voice. “He’ll start to distance himself from her soon. It’s for his own good.”

My heart broke.

She was trying to make Derick leave me.

I wanted to step out, to confront her, to scream and demand why. But something in me stopped. I wasn’t ready, not yet. Not until I knew everything.

The man nodded slightly, turning halfway as if to leave, and that’s when I caught a glimpse of his side profile -just enough to see he wasn’t from our pack. He wore no insignia, and his scent carried the faint trace of another territory.

An outsider.

Before I could process it all, I heard the soft snap of a twig under my foot.

Her head turned sharply in my direction.

Panic shot through me like lightning. I ducked lower and backed away slowly, holding my breath. After a tense few seconds, I heard her footsteps retreating toward the other side of the forest.

I exhaled shakily, my heart pounding as I ran back toward the training ground, careful not to draw attention.

By the time I got back, Derick was already there, waiting, his arms crossed and his expression unreadable.
