Roxanne had been in the small town for a week. She had completed her enrollment paperwork and thrown herself into a packed routine of daily classes.
Mornings were for lectures, afternoons were for outdoor sketching with classmates and instructors, and evenings were reserved for studying. Life was simple yet fulfilling.
She quickly adapted to the rhythm. Elvira had secretly informed her that Sebastian was still searching for her and hadn't let go. He hadn't given up. Because of that, Roxanne had to keep a low profile and stay cautious.
She didn't dare use her Arland-issued debit card, worried that a single transaction would give away her location. Over the past week, she had been relying on Zachary's supplementary card for expenses.
Through conversations with her classmates, she learned that Niskera—the capital of Hyvaland—was a wealthy city known for its auction houses. She figured she could sell True Love's Heart there.
She had no plans to tell Zachary about it. She simply told him she was heading to Niskera with another international student, Carolyn Parker, to sketch landscapes. Zachary didn't question her.
The ride from the town to Niskera took about an hour by train. They could make it a day trip—leave in the morning and return by night.
Niskera was a bustling, vibrant city, full of old-world charm with Edevane-style architecture.
Carolyn was familiar with the area and took Roxanne straight to an old auction house tucked into a cobbled street. The owner, Jack Ziegler, was a middle-aged Valorian in his 50s with a friendly face.
"Mr. Ziegler, this is my friend. She has a diamond ring she'd like to sell."
Jack gave Roxanne a welcoming smile. "Let me take a look."
Roxanne reached into her pocket and pulled out the ring.
The moment Jack laid eyes on True Love's Heart, his expression changed and his eyes lit up. "Miss, this is no ordinary ring," he said, instantly recognizing its value.
Beside her, Carolyn rolled her eyes dramatically and jumped in to say, "Don't listen to her, Mr. Ziegler. She's messing with you. The ring's legit. She's just short on cash. Please help her out and sell it."
Jack didn't bother digging deeper. From the engraving inside, he could tell the ring was originally from Valoria. And since it was from Valoria, selling it here in Arland wouldn't be a problem. He could remove the setting and make a few adjustments to the diamond, and it would look like an entirely different ring.
Still, Jack was a businessman. He could tell Roxanne was desperate to sell.
He said, "This is a high-quality diamond ring. It can definitely be sold, but if we take it to auction, you'll have to wait for confirmation and for the final bidding price. After we take our commission, we'll transfer the rest to you. But if I buy it from you directly, I can wire you the money right now."
Roxanne raised a brow. "How much are you offering?"
Jack held up three fingers.
