Two figures stood face to face, both on high alert. The masked Oliver demanded in a chilly tone, “Who are you?”
Josefina, also concealed behind a mask, altered her voice to resemble that of a world-weary elderly woman. “Have you been detaining people from the auction on your island?”
Oliver frowned, denying the accusation, “Demon’s Isle is all about legitimate business. Anyone attending the auction is escorted off the island. We don’t imprison people without cause.”
“That means you probably have.” Josefina shot back.
“There are no strangers from the auction here on the island,” Oliver maintained.
Josefina wasn’t convinced, but after searching for quite some time and finding not a shred of evidence, she began to doubt if Livia was even on Demon's Isle. Could she have left? Maybe she was injured or unconscious? Various possibilities ran through her mind as to why Livia hadn’t returned.
While Josefina was deep in thought, Oliver said, “You sneak into my room and then rummage around Demon's Isle for half a day just to find one person?”
Josefina was taken aback. “You knew I went to your room? Then why did you let me go?” she asked coldly.
Disguised, Josefina’s figure was altered, her hair and voice unrecognizable. No one could associate her with her true identity.
Likewise, Oliver was transformed. Even his hands were altered, preventing anyone from connecting him to the tycoon who calls the shots in the business world.
The two people, both unaware of each other's identities, watched each other warily, their gazes sharp.
Josefina hadn’t anticipated that the man before her would know of her arrival on Demon's Isle or the extent of her search. What’s more, he had not taken any action against her.
What was this man up to?
Without a reply, Josefina pressed again, “If you knew I was on your turf and let me search freely without intervening, what exactly are you after?” Slowly backing away, Josefina clutched a handful of powder, ready to make her escape.
Oliver advanced, his eyes dark and intent as he closed in on Josefina. “I want to see exactly what you’re looking for.”
