Chapter 401 First Second was overwhelmed with mixed emotions.
Jaramana Town.
Just about six miles from Damascus.
Not too far, yet not too close. But those mere six miles felt like stepping into another world.
The roads were muddy, and as the car drove through, clouds of dust rose up. On either side, remnants of war lay in ruins, painting a picture of the devastation this place had endured.
The car finally stopped at a rundown corner. Passersby occasionally glanced their way, their eyes devoid of fear or envy. Their expressions were so utterly indifferent, as if they had resigned themselves to fate.
Seeing them, First and Second felt a mix of emotions.
Had they not come here themselves, they might never have imagined such poverty and suffering existed.
For the people here, perhaps poverty and suffering were no longer their main concerns; survival was.
Having grown up in peaceful places with comfortable lives, scenes like these were supposed to be in movies, yet here they were, vividly real before them.
The two were left speechless.
In front of them, Tara Green seemed unfazed by it all. After parking the car, she looked at them through the rearview mirror. “The population here is quite mixed. Stay alert, you two.”
Only then did they snap back to reality, nodding at Tara.
“Let’s go!” Tara said as she got out of the car, with First and Second following behind.
Once out, they walked along a path.
Second couldn’t hold back and asked, “Tara, have you been here before?”
Tara shook her head. “No,” she replied, understanding what he meant. “But I’ve been to places much harsher than this. Fo them, the worry isn’t about their next meal, but whether they’ll see tomorrow’s sunrise.”
The two looked at Tara, momentarily speechless.
Tara smiled at them and said, “What’s wrong, gentlemen? Feeling like you’re living in the clouds?”
In comparison, it wasn’t an exaggeration at all.
Even First was silent, prompting Tara to continue, “That’s why we should cherish every day we have, because we’re truly much luckier than these people.” As she glanced around, a hint of compassion and complexity flickered in her eyes.
First and Second both nodded.
Just then, a figure appeared in front of them, waving energetically.
Second noticed and asked, “Tara, is that the person?”
Tara Green looked up and was momentarily stunned when she saw the person in front of her. After a careful glance, she nodded, “I think it is. Let’s go check it out!”

The three of them quickened their pace and headed over.
“Savior,” the man said with a smile as he approached Tara. “I never thought I’d see you again.”
Tara looked at him, realizing she barely recognized him after all these years. “Yes, Justin, it’s been a long time.”
“Yeah, six or seven years!” Justin replied, glancing at First and Second beside her. “Savior, are these your kids?”
Tara quickly shook her head. “No, they’re my… brothers!”
Justin smiled warmly at First and Second. “Hello.”
“Hi!”
“Hi!”
First and Second replied.
Then Justin gestured to them, “Come on, let’s go to my place.”
The three followed him to what he called home.
The house was surrounded by concrete walls and was somewhat rundown. Inside, there was an assortment of worn–out furniture, as if salvaged from somewhere, along with some old cooking utensils.
The floor was relatively clean, covered with a carpet that seemed to have come from who knows where.
As they entered, there was a small child, about four years old, timidly hiding behind an adult, while an elderly person lay among a pile of clutter on the floor.
The sight was heart–wrenching.
Justin found a clean spot and placed a plastic bag on the ground. “Please, have a seat.”
There wasn’t much to sit on in the room; the only clean area was right beneath their feet.
Tara sat down, followed by First and Second, who didn’t hesitate to join her.
A smile appeared on Justin’s face.
He seemed to want to offer them something, but looking around, there was nothing available.
Tara noticed his intention and spoke up, “Justin, don’t worry about it.”
Justin glanced at Tara, hesitated for a moment, and then sat down in front of them. “I’m sorry, there’s really nothing here to offer… I’m sorry.”
“Tara, I remember you weren’t living here before…” Tara said, looking at him. “What happened?”
Justin explained, “The place we used to live was bombed, and we moved here with the others. But within a few years, this place ended up like this too…”
“Don’t the people from Red Mark Base care about you?” Tara asked.
Justin replied, “The ones who did this… were them.”
Tara was taken aback, “You mean… it was the Red Mark Base people?”
