Hallie had been practicing piano all day, but she still couldn’t get the hang of it. Just as frustration was bubbling up, her phone rang–it was Noreen.
Hallic, I’m getting pissed by the second!” Noreen snapped. “I’m the Reeds‘ golden girl. When have I ever been treated like hat?”
he took a deep breath and continued, “Edith dared to lay a hand on me, and she’s going to pay for it. If I get someone to ough up her, you won’t be mad, right?”
Noreen, calm down,” Hallie said, thinking fast. “You and Edith already have bad blood. If she gets jumped now, everyone’ll oint straight at you. If this gets back to your parents, things will only get worse.”
loreen ground her teeth. “Then what am I supposed to do? I can’t just swallow this. But I can’t take her in a fight, either. I’m. o mad I could explode!”
lallic bit her lip. She’d been holding in her anger for two days, and it was burning hot. “Here’s an idea,” she said, her voice old. “Edith has four brothers. She’d do anything for them.”
hat night, Edith got home after nine. She headed upstairs to find Joseph, but his room was empty.
Dallas spoke up. “Mr. Joseph Lovett usually gets back around ten. It’s still early.”
dith pulled out her phone and dialed. “Where are you, Joseph? Finished your homework? Why aren’t you home?”
None of your business!” Joseph hung up right away.

ghtened. She had four brothers, and not one of them was home right now. She had no clue which one the alking about. But if the System was yammering about protection, something must be wrong with one of them.
Rie tried calling Joseph again. This time, the call went straight to voicemail–no answer, just an abrupt disconnect.
Dallas noticed her tight expression and tensed up. “Ms. Lovett, is something wrong?”
Get the driver. I need to find Joseph–now.” Edith’s lips were pressed into a thin line. “He’s in trouble.”
Dallas didn’t ask questions. He called the driver, got the car ready, and started to follow. But before he could climb in, the car sped away.
Edith told the driver to stick to Joseph’s usual route to school, her eyes glued to the roadside.
Ten minutes into the drive, she spotted Joseph. He was sprinting down the street, with four or five older guys hot on his
heels.
“Stop the car!” Edith yelled. Before it even fully pulled over, she was out the door.
Without hesitation, the driver followed her. Built like a tank, his mere appearance made the teenage boys scatter instantly.

Chapter 17
Joseph was doubled over, gasping for breath. Under the dim streetlight, he looked up and saw Edith approaching. Silhouetted against the light, she looked almost ethereal, like a slow–mo scene in a movie.

No one had ever come looking for him when he stayed out late. But here, in his worst moment, Edith showed up like some kind of guardian angel–scaring those guys off without lifting a finger.
He stood frozen, watching Edith walk over. Her expression grew colder with each step.
