Sunlight streamed through the window, casting a warm glow over the room. Hallie slowly opened her eyes and glanced at Jonathan, lying beside her.
Jonathan was thirty–two, yet still looked so young–handsome, rich, and, most importantly, powerful.
Hallie thought, ‘So what if he’s already married? It’s not like I ever wanted to marry some guy that much older than me anyway. All I want is to climb even higher. One day, I’ll stomp Edith deep into the dirt!
Just as Hallie sat up in bed, Jonathan woke up.
Jonathan rolled over and pressed Hallie down beneath him, teasing, “Where did you get so good at this?” He couldn’t believe this innocent little girl had him completely enthralled.
Hallie’s cheeks flushed. She didn’t dare admit it had all started the day Edith made her watch those videos. After that, she began teaching herself and secretly watched even more.
She’d always been a quick study–good grades, and she could master almost anything just by copying what she saw. With little effort, she could nail it.
A young, innocent girl acting that way–it was simply irresistible. For a moment, Jonathan felt like a reckless teenager again, pulse racing with raw energy.
The two stayed tangled in bed until almost eleven before finally dragging themselves up. Their plane tickets to Bonrea were already booked.
Jonathan had been in Sunspire for a while and was due to go back and check in at work, while Hallie had to return to her normal school life.
With just over twenty days left until the SATs, Hallie couldn’t even remember the last time she actually studied.
As the plane flew from Sunspire to Bonrea, Hallie gazed out at the drifting clouds. She thought, ‘Starting today, my life has gone off the rails. This isn’t a downfall–it’s the beginning of something beautiful. From now on, Bonrea will be my stage!’
Throughout the flight, Jonathan was absorbed in his work. When they landed, he walked off without even looking at Hallie, treating her like a total stranger–even though just hours ago, they’d been wrapped up in beach other.
His assistant, Liam, fell behind, stopping next to Hallie, He said, “Ms. Lovett, I’ll take you to the hotel.”
Hallie bit her lip and asked, “Will I ever get to see Mr. Quinn again?”
Liam had no answer for that. He’d seen plenty of women over the years, all desperate to catch Jonathan’s eye, most fading away quickly.
He thought, ‘As long as this girl knows how to behave, she might be allowed to stay by Mr. Quinn’s side for a
while!’

Liam led Hallie out a side exit of the airport, and as they reached the doorway, Hallie could see from afar someone waiting for Jonathan.
It was a woman–sun hat, oversized sunglasses, medical mask–elegant dress, high heels, radiating pure class.
Even without seeing her face, Hallie instantly recognized the woman: she had to be that A–list star who’d married into the Quinn family, Jonathan’s famous and legitimate wife, Sloane.
Jonathan walked up and, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, slid his arm around Sloane’s slender waist. The two of them bent down and slipped into the waiting car together.
Just as the car door closed, Hallie caught sight of Sloane lowering her mask and showing off those bold red lips–just in time to kiss Jonathan.
“Ms. Lovett, this way,” Liam said, snapping Hallie out of her trance.
Hallie shoved her tangled feelings aside and silently followed Liam into another car.
The Quinn family was one of Bonrea’s top–tier clans. While the Larsons were entangled in politics and the military, the Quinns–who had returned from overseas and helped drive the nation’s growth–were deeply respected across all the right social circles.
Jonathan had spent years running projects abroad, and when he finally returned home, he made a stop in Sunspire before heading back to Bonrea. So his mother, Eleanor, hadn’t seen him in quite some time.
Eleanor was still quite youthful–Sebastian had married her late in life as his second wife. They had a son and a daughter together, but because the first marriage had already produced an older son, Jonathan remained second in line.
As soon as Jonathan came home, Eleanor came forward beaming. She said, “Jonathan, you’re finally back. I really don’t understand–why are you messing around with business in Sunspire?
“That little place isn’t worth the hassle–even big projects there don’t make real money. Why waste your time
there?”
Jonathan shrugged and said, “If I wasn’t trying so hard to get Dad’s approval, I wouldn’t bother with it either.”
At that, Eleanor’s face darkened. She grumbled inwardly, ‘Jonathan’s brilliant–his overseas ventures are raking in enormous profits, yet Sebastian still isn’t satisfied.
‘But it’s not Jonathan he’s dissatisfied with; he just dotes on Julian, his son from the first marriage. That’s all there is to it
Just then, Julian stepped through the doorway.
Eleanor called out calmly, “Julian, you’re back too. Someone, get dinner ready.”
The Quinn household wasn’t large. Sebastian was still at the office, Eleanor’s daughter was in her final year of high school, and Julian’s wife was in the hospital. That left just four people at home: Eleanor, Julian, Jonathan,
and Sloane.

The mood at the dinner table was anything but pleasant.

After the meal, Eleanor said, “Julian, you’ve got all these projects. If you can’t handle everything, then share some with Jonathan. You two are family–why keep score?”
Julian looked up and asked, “How about the Eastbay project?”
Eleanor couldn’t believe her ears.
The Eastbay project was the second–biggest deal in the Quinn Group right now, with the top one still under Sebastian’s control.
Eleanor thought, ‘Is Julian really to hand that project over? Something’s definitely fishy.’
Julian added, “But I do have one condition. I want all of Jonathan’s assets in Sunspire in return.”
Jonathan ran the numbers in his head. Sure, the Eastbay project brought in a staggering profit each year, but all the revenue went straight to the Quinn Group’s accounts–none of it actually landed in the project manager’s pocket.
As for Sunspire, he only had a single project there: a plot of land he had just acquired, and the ownership transfer hadn’t even gone through yet. Altogether, it was worth less than 30 million.
Being in charge of the Eastbay project meant getting one foot into the very core of the Quinn Group- something Jonathan had been planning for a long time. He hadn’t expected such an opportunity to just show up like this.
Leaning back in his chair, Jonathan replied, “Since you’re being so generous, I shouldn’t be stingy either. I’ll put another 15 million into EverRise Corporation in Sunspire. Hope that’s good enough for you, Julian.”
Julian wasn’t about to complain. All these years, he’d burned himself out for the Quinn family, giving them every ounce of his life.
If his assistant hadn’t uncovered the truth a few days ago, he probably would’ve kept throwing himself into the Quinns forever–only to end up with nothing to show for it.
The Quinn Group held no real appeal for Julian now. All he wanted now was to go to Sunspire and bring his sister back.
His sister, Melinda–the Quinn family’s eldest daughter–had disappeared without a trace twenty years ago and never returned. Everyone in the Quinn family said she was gone for good.
Julian never bought it. He’d spent years investigating her fate, and finally, he’d uncovered a clue. Whether the clue was real or not, he was going to track it down himself.
