Chapter 25
Thomas was a big, muscular guy. He stood at least six feet tall, with a solid build and a square jaw that made him look intimidating as hell.
Hallie couldn’t stand him because he looked too rough around the edges. Whenever he approached her to confess his feelings, she’d feel uncomfortable.
But now, instead of pursuing her, he was going after Edith–that made her even more uncomfortable. She kept a stone–cold expression, trying to look like she couldn’t care less.
Edith remained seated, glancing up at Thomas standing in the doorway. Since she didn’t recognize him, she simply lowered her head and went back to her homework.
It was break time, and no teacher was around. Thomas strolled in directly and made a beeline for Edith’s desk. “Didn’t you hear me? Get out here, he barked, his voice cold as ice.
Cathy jumped up, gasping. “You’re from Class Three–you can’t just barge into our room like this.”
I’m talking to Edith. Stay out of it.” Thomas snapped before tuning to Edith impatiently. “You wanna hash this out here, or
outside?”
Edith blinked, confused. She’d never seen this guy before–what could they possibly need to hash out? In a cold voice, she shot back, “Spit it out already.”
Thomas let out a scoff. “You pushed Hallie down at the school gate this morning Everyone’s talking about it. You owe her an apology.”
Hallie froze. She’d never thought he’d show up for that. All her irritation melted away, replaced by a surge of pride. She tilted her chin up, preening like a peacock showing off its feathers
Edith’s lips curled into a smirk. “A simp plays hero, huh?”
Thomas lost it right away. “What nonsense are you talking about?”
Edith jumped up. She was fired up, and with all the confidence from the System, she now radiated an intensity that could rival the head teacher.
Thomas, who was a head taller than her, stepped back, nearly tripping over the blackboard ledge. Edith approached him, step by step.
Thomas suddenly realized he’d just been intimidated by a girl. He balled his fists, trying to figure out how to push back without looking like a total jerk who was bullying someone smaller.
Just then, Edith slammed her heel against the blackboard behind him. Her fist crashed down right next to his ear, her eyes razor–sharp. “You here to make me apologize to Hallie?”
“I–1…” Thomas was completely stunned, his mind reeling. “This girl not only has an overwhelming presence, but she’s also managed to completely dominate me with a single move.
“This whole class was studying, and yet you barged in, screwing up everyone’s focus,” Edith snapped. “You gotta apologize to everyone here.”
She radiated more than just intense energy–there was an undeniable leadership aura that forced Thomas into submission. He blurted out, “Sorry, everyone. I shouldn’t have crashed your study time.”

Chapter 25
Edith dropped her leg. “Beat it.”
Thomas turned and walked out. Just as he reached the doorway, he froze.
Wait–wasn’t I here to make her apologize to Hallie? How’d I end up saying sorry? Why’d I let her boss me around like that? What’s wrong with me? he thought.
The classroom was dead silent. No one had expected that Edith–who looked so small and unassuming–would scare
Thomas away.
Damn, she’s hardcore, they thought, still stunned by her swift kick and punch.
Host has earned genuine admiration from over twenty classmates. Reward: Leadership +5.1
Edith found leadership had its perks. Just now, Thomas hadn’t dared to mouth off when she shut him down. She figured she could test this new skill on Zachary when he moved back home.
Thomas is such a wimp,” Noreen scoffed. “Thank God you never even looked his way. Dating a guy that weak would be a complete disaster.”
Hallie pressed her lips together, her fingers clenching into tight fists. She was realizing Edith was way tougher than she’d let
Edith had just spread out a test paper when Dan walked in and said, “Edith, come with me for a minute.”
Edith set down her pen and followed him out without a word.
Noreen scoffed, “She’s only been at our school a few days and already stirring up drama. Dan’s totally gonna call her out and hen rat her out to her parents–she’s screwed.”
A couple of girls nearby nodded along.
Her grades are trash, and she’s always causing trouble. Dan should just kick her out of school.”
Heard she’s messing around with Larry. A troublemaker like her doesn’t deserve someone smart like him. The school hould boot her already!”
Hallie’s face hardened. That bitch actually hooked up with Larry? The Larsons are loaded, and ten Lovett families combined couldn’t even touch a fraction of their money!
She’d made moves on Larry, but he’d completely shut her down. She couldn’t figure out why on earth he’d be into someone
like Edith
Hallie balled her hands into fists, shoving down the jealousy burning inside. “Don’t say that,” she said softly. Our families go way back Larry and Edith are just friends. That’s it.”
“But you can keep things cool with Larry, right? I bet Edith thinks she’s some gold–digger who can worm her way into the Larson family. As if they’d ever want someone like her. Dream on,” Norcen smirked.
Hallie’s mood lightened a little at that.
As the class buzzed with gossip, Edith strolled back in and plopped down in her scat, calm as ever.
Cathy leaned over, looking anxious. “Did Mr. Humphrey ask about you and Thomas?”
Edith blinked. “What’s Thomas got to do with it? You think a guy like him would run to the teacher to tattle?”

Chapter 25
She pulled out her pen. “Mr. Humphrey said if I’ve got time for the piano performance, my grades must be solid. So now I gotta land in the top twenty on this test.”
Cathy cleared her throat uncomfortably. Class One was the top–tier class, just below the Honors Class. Hallie, their top student, usually scored about 1300. Even the lowest in Class One was over 900.
Cathy had seen Edith’s previous test scores–barely over 400. Even with a genius like Larry tutoring her, jumping up 500 points in two weeks was impossible. Still, Cathy gave a supportive smile. “You’ve got this, Edith.”
Noreen laughed. “Who’s our class bottom–feeder again? Looks like they might want to step aside now.”
