Chapter 3
Chapter 3
The Lovett Manor had four floors.
The basement held the wine cellar and storage rooms. The first floor was where the living room and servants‘ quarters were. On the second floor were the master bedroom and what used to be Edith’s room.
The third floor belonged to the boys–four bedrooms and a small guest room. All the rooms on that floor were tiny.
Hallie had grown used to her spacious room on the second floor. There was no way she’d give it up wallt a fight.
“I’m not moving out!” she snapped. “This is my room. Nobody’s taking it from me.”
Karen forced herself to stay calm. “Hallie, be reasonable-”
“Why should I give it up just because she came back?” Hallie yelled, completely dropping her usual act in front of Karen.
You already gave her a free ride out of that hick town–how dare she try to push her luck?” she spat. “Mom, send her back. Let her rot like the pathetic low–class nobody she is-”
“Enough!” Karen’s voice dropped, cold and sharp. If she had any other choice, she never would’ve brought Edith back into this house to ruin her life.
“Since it’s such a big deal…” Edith tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and said lightly, “How about this–I’ll take the third floor.”
Karen narrowed her eyes. She didn’t know why Edith, who had been fighting to reclaim her space a moment ago, was now backing down.
Edith smiled sweetly. “I just don’t feel like sleeping in a room someone else has already used. It grosses me out.”
With that, she picked up her suitcase and started up the stairs.
All of her brothers had rooms on the third floor. In her previous life, Edith had been stuck in the servant’s quarters and had never even set foot up there.
Watching her disappear around the corner, Hallie was fuming. “Mom, did you see that? She doesn’t even respect us. That bumpkin has no right to act like she owns the place!”
Karen gently rubbed her daughter’s back and said in a soft voice, “Just three more months, Hallie. She’ll be eighteen soon.”
“So” Hallie frowned. “What does that have to do with anything?”
Kar
Voice turned bitter. “That dead mother of hers left a will. Once her kids turn eighteen, they each inherit ten percent
res. That’s fifty percent, split between the five of them.
11, get their hands on that, do you think there’ll be any place left for us?
“Before Edith turns eighteen, I’ll ruin her name. I’ll make sure she has no choice but to hand over those shares. So hang in there, Hallie. Just three more months.”
Hallie stayed silent.
Edith stepped into the guest room on the third floor. It wasn’t exactly small–definitely bigger than the hospital room she’d

spent ten years in during her previous life. There was even a little balcony.
System Mission complete Reward unlocked Super Strength, to help you become a powerful heiress]
Edith couldn’t help thinking the system must’ve misunderstood what heiress meant. No matter how she looked at it, she couldn’t quite connect heiress with super strength
Still strength wasn’t a bad thing.
She walked over to the coffee table–a big slab of marble that looked ridiculously heavy. But when she grabbed it with both hands she lifted it like it was nothing.
Edith’s eyes lit up
In her previous life. Hallie had sent people more than once to pin her down and keep her under control. But now? With this kind of strength, even if ten bodyguards surrounded her, she was pretty sure she could break out.
She smiled. “Thanks, System.”
System: [Complete the next mission to earn more rewards. Keep up the good work.]
Edith was just about to ask what the next mission was when she heard a voice downstairs. “Joseph, you’re back?”
She rushed to the balcony and looked down. A nine–year–old boy had just stepped out of the car, his backpack slung over one shoulder. His face was all cool and serious.
That was her third brother–Joseph Lovett. When Edith left the Lovett Manor, he had been three years old, still chasing after
her.
But three–year–olds didn’t hold on to memories. Now Joseph had no recollection of Melinda or Edith.
Thanks to Karen and Hallie constantly feeding him lies, Joseph grew up resenting Edith. He called Karen Mom, and treated Hallie like his one and only sister.
In her previous life, Joseph had been the brother Edith liked the least. Cedric and Zachary were cold to her, and Shaun, who had autism, didn’t speak at all. But Joseph? He wore his hatred on his face.
Joseph had been Karen’s sharpest blade–and Edith had been cut deeply by him. But even that blade dulled in the end. Joseph lost his sight.
Now, looking down at him from above, Edith could see his beautiful eyes–just like Melinda’s.
Suddenly, Joseph looked up and met her gaze. Just for a second. Then he looked away and walked into the house with the same cold expression.
As soon
kedin, Hallie frowned. “Joseph, why are you home so early?”
Joseph spent by afternoons at an internet café, gaming until at least ten at night.
He dropped his backpack on the couch and said flatly, “Didn’t someone come home today?”
What he said mele Karen livid. No matter how much she tried to poison his mind against Edith, Joseph still somehow saw
her as his sister
Six years ago, Karen had married Vincent Lovett, bringing Hallic with her into the family–even though Vincent already had one daughter and four sons.

Chapter 3
Karen did everything she could to get rid of Edith. If she hadn’t lost the ability to have children, she would sent Vincent’s
sons away too.
Since she couldn’t drive them out, she decided to ruin them instead.
With a soft smile, Karen said, “Joseph, I had the stall get you the newest game console. It’s already in your room–go check it out.”
Edith had just come downstairs and caught the tail end of that sentence.
Her brothers were still at the age where they should’ve been focused on school. But under Karen’s indulgence–and subtle manipulation–they’d wasted their time on games and distractions, until their lives were completely destroyed in the fire.
She wouldn’t let the same tragedy happen again.
System: [New mission: A qualified heiress carns the unconditional support of her siblings. Try to get your brother to pour you a glass of water.]
The corners of Edith’s mouth twitched. Joseph hated her the most right now–there was no way he’d willingly get her a
drink.
This system really knew how to make things hard.
