Chapter 86

Chapter 86

The bar was loud and wild with music and dancing. Mike spotted a bar girl he liked, grabbed a drink, and headed over to try his luck chatting her up.

Kane rushed in from outside and reported, Mr. Larson, just got the intel. That kid’s name is Zachary Lovett, the second son of the Lovett family, and Edith’s little brother.

Marcus twirled his glass in his hand and said, Second son? So there’s an eldest son too?

Kane replied, The Lovett family has four sons. But right now, only two of them are living with Edith.

Marcus squeezed his fingers tight. The glass in his hand shattered. He sneered inwardly, Some teenage punk actually expects me to call him Dad-utterly ridiculous.

He said coldly, Next time the other personality surfaces, lock me up.

Kane was left speechless. He thought, When Mr. Larson’s other personality comes out, he’s like a total demonthere’s no way I can actually lock him up.

Looks like I’ll really have to secretly hire a couple more bodyguards to keep watch over him 24/7!

The night grew deeper as Edith returned home from her evening classes. She stepped into the living room and found Joseph quietly sitting by the coffee table, focused on his homework.

These days, Edith barely had to say a wordJoseph would just do his homework all on his own. He was so good and sensible now.

Seeing Edith, Joseph called out, Edith, I’m done with my homework. As he spoke, he passed his exercise book to her.

Edith flipped through the pages and saw he got 80% of it right. She thought, He’s really come a long way.’ She then pointed at the last math problem and walked him through the solution.

Joseph leaned in, taking careful notes and making sure to write down every key point.

After finishing the explanation, Edith was about to head upstairs to work on her own papers.

Suddenly, Joseph called out, Edith, wait a sec,He bent down, grabbed a rectangular box from under the coffee table, kept his head down, and quickly stuffed it into Edith’s arms. It’s for you,he muttered, not daring to meet her eyes.

Edith blinked in surprise,

Joseph cleared his throat and said, My teacher said I’ve made a lot of progress today. It’s all thanks to you, Edith. So, I bought you a pair of shoeshope you like them.

Just then, the System said: [Host, you have received a heartfelt gift from a family member for the first time. Reward: One wishgranting charm.]

Out of nowhere, something appeared in Edith’s palma small yellow charm.

Edith had never believed in this kind of thinguntil she died and came back with a System. Now, there was nothing in this

world she couldn’t swallow.

Edith held the yellow charm to her chest, closing her eyes and silently wishing in her heart: [I hope Shaun can finally come out of his closed off world.] When her wish was made, the yellow charm vanished from her palm.

Joseph asked, Edith, what are you doing? Don’t you like the shoes I got for you?He glanced at Edith’s feet and saw she was already wearing a new pair. He thought, Looks like my gift came a bit late.

Edith lifted the lid and found a pair of pink women’s leather shoes. She gave Joseph a gentle, warm smile and said, Thank you, Joseph. I really do like your gift.

To her, these shoes weren’t just a presentthey were filled with hope. She thought, If Shaun’s illness truly gets better, Joseph would be the one who makes it all possible.

Joseph could see that Edith genuinely liked them. He grinned and said, Come on, Edith, try them on.

Edith sat down on the couch and took off her sneakers.

Her shoes had broken that morning, and Larry had insisted on taking her to the mall for a new pair. Luckily, she was quick enough to make sure she paid before he did.

She already felt guilty enough for having Larry tutor her every daythere was no way she’d let him spend money on her.

Edith slipped on the pink leather shoes, and they fit perfectly. She thought, I never would’ve guessed Joseph actually has an eye for picking shoes.

Ms. Lovett, those shoes look amazing on you,” Dallas said as he walked through the living room. He added, But they’d look even better with a little dress.

Joseph pressed his lips together.

Hallie’s room was huge, with a massive walkin closet that probably had at least a hundred dresses in it. But Edith’s small wardrobe was practically empty.

Joseph thought, Dad never has time for things like this, and Karen sure doesn’t care about Edith. Guess this tough job has to be on me. Anyway, I’ve got enough cash on handgetting Edith a hundred dresses should be no big deal.

Just then, Zachary appeared at the living room entrance.

Before Edith turned, the sharp smell of alcohol reached her. She had little affection for Vincent, yet even she knew he never touched drinks or cigarettes, and the staff would never dare imbibe on duty. She spun around and saw Zachary,

disheveled and battered.

Zachary had left the house that morning in a spotless white tracksuit. Now it was grimy and torn at the knees, his hair wild and tangled. He looked as if he’d crawled off a battlefieldbattered, miserable.

He stood in the doorway, guilt practically written all over his face.

Mr. Zachary Lovett, what happened to you?Dallas gasped. He quickly rushed over and helped Zachary inside.

Zachary winced with every step. He kept sneaking glances at Edith, looking like he couldn’t decide if he wanted her

attention or wanted to vanish into the floor.

Edith slipped on her slippers, tucked the pink leather shoes into the cabinet, slung her backpack over her shoulder, and went upstairs without a word, never once sparing Zachary a glance.

Zachary suddenly felt a wave of hurt and indignation wash over him. He thought, Seriously? I’m this banged up, and she doesn’t even ask if I’m okay? She’s acting like I don’t even exist.

He blurted out, Hey! Aren’t you even curious where I’ve been?

Edith didn’t bother looking back. She replied, Nope.

Zachary froze for a second. He thought, She’s so cold.

Just then, Joseph pinched his nose on purpose and said, Zachary, you stink. Did you sneak off to a bar? Our teacher said under eighteens aren’t even allowed in. Zachary, hurry up and say sorry to Edith already.

Zachary shot him a glare. He grumbled inwardly, He always knows how to push my buttons. Starting now, he is not my brother anymore.

Joseph stuck his tongue out in triumph, then put on his most angelic voice and said, I’m going upstairs to review for

tomorrow.

Edith could totally see through Joseph’s little scheme and played along. She said softly, So wellbehaved, Joseph. It’s the weekend tomorrow, so I’ll take you out to have some fun.

Joseph lit up with excitement and dashed back to his room to hit the books.

Edith kept heading upstairs, her figure radiating pure indifferencecold as could be.

A flood of hurt crashed over Zachary, and he didn’t even know why it stung so bad.

Dallas was carefully cleaning the cut on Zachary’s elbow when Zachary suddenly let out a dramatic yelp. He yelled, Ouch!

That hurts. Dallas, can you be a little more gentle?

Dallas felt wronged. He thought, I’m already being as gentle as I can.
