Zachary went so pale that the ten pimples looked bigger, angrier. He stared at his reflection in disbelief–he’d always had flawless skin, and now ten angry spots glared back at him.
Zachary suddenly snapped his gaze to the pile of homework sitting on his desk. He thought, ‘Could those pimples really be because I didn’t finish my homework? This is just way too bizarre.‘
Joseph asked, “Zachary, did you eat something sketchy at the bar last night?”
“This has nothing to do with what I ate,” Zachary replied.
Edith had somehow appeared at the doorway, leaning lazily against the doorframe, looking totally relaxed.
She said, “You didn’t finish your homework today, so now you’ve got ten pimples. Skip it again tomorrow and you’ll have twenty. Your face is barely big enough–where would the rest even fit? There won’t be enough room.”
Joseph said, “That makes me think of a toad.”
Zachary glanced at his reflection in the mirror; the more he stared, the more he really did look like a toad. He broke down
and buried his face in his hands.
When his fingers accidentally brushed one of the fresh, red pimples, he nearly lost it.
He thought, ‘Thank goodness it is Friday. At least I don’t have to show my face at school and die of embarrassment.”
Edith thought, ‘Zachary is such a vain guy–getting pimples probably hurt him more than getting punched. Bet he’ll finally sit down and do his homework now.‘
She reminded him, “Finish your homework before you go to bed, or you’ll just end up leaving it until tomorrow again.”
Zachary angrily threw the mirror down. He thought, ‘No way these stupid pimples are from not doing homework. I’m not buying it—I’m not doing my homework tonight, and we’ll see if there are any more tomorrow.
Zachary snapped his homework shut, grabbed his phone, and typed in: quick acne fixes.
The night flew by.
Even on weekends, Edith was an early bird. She spread out a science test paper at her desk and started tackling the problems. Working on science first thing always woke up her brain better than coffee.
By the time she finished the test, it was already nine in the morning. Edith got up and went to wake her brothers. She planned to take Zachary and Joseph to visit Shaun at the special school today.
As soon as she opened the door, she spotted Dallas in the living room downstairs, walking in with Kelvin.
Just then, the System said: (New mission. A true lady should be surrounded by admirers. Host, please win back the suitor who’s about to lose interest.)
Edith frowned and thought, ‘Someone’s about to lose interest? So, at this moment, Kelvin is about to catch feelings for Hallie? He’s supposed to be my admirer, but now he’s starting to like Hallie? Can people really be into two girls at the same

Back in her previous life, Kelvin confessed to Edith right before the SATS. She’d actually convinced herself he was into her for real–but looking back, it was all just for those shares in the Lovett Group she had.
Then Hallie became the heir to the Lovett Group, holding a whopping 50% of the shares, and Kelvin married her.
To someone like Kelvin, feelings were feelings and profit was profit. Whoever offered him the bigger benefit, that was who
he’d care about the most.
Once Kelvin actually married Hallie, the dream girl he once put on a pedestal became just the “old ball–and–chain.”
Meanwhile, Edith–the ex he used to brush off as a meaningless hookup–suddenly turned into the one that got away, haunting him right through his wedding night.
Just thinking about Kelvin calling out her name in bed made Edith feel sick to her stomach. This was the first time she actually felt disgusted by one of the System’s missions.
She thought, ‘A guy this shameless doesn’t deserve to stick around, and I sure as hell don’t need some pathetic wannabe to boost my reputation as a true lady.’
Downstairs, Dallas led Kelvin into the living room.
Hallie greeted him with a sweet smile. She said, “Thank you for coming, Kelvin. Showing up like this really shows you truly see me as a friend.”
Kelvin handed her a notebook and said, “These are the key points from the past couple of days, plus some predicted
questions for the monthly exam. Go over them at home.”
Hallie said, “You’re so good to me, I honestly don’t know how I could ever thank you. Everyone at school is calling me a
thief now. Even my closest friends have cut me off.
“I keep trying to tell them I was set up, but nobody believes me. Only you, Kelvin, only you still care enough to talk to me.” With that, she covered her face and broke down sobbing.
Hallie had on a comfy floral house dress, her hair in a loose braid over one shoulder, a few wispy strands falling softly by her cheeks. She looked so pitiful, like some fragile flower crying in the rain.
Kelvin just stood there, lost for words, not sure what on earth he could say to make her feel better.
He’d heard all the gossip flying around school, but after knowing Hallie for so long, he didn’t believe she could actually do something as ridiculous as stealing a piano.
Kelvin thought, ‘The Lovett family is way more than my family. My allowance every month is already huge, and Hallie must have gotten even more from her family, Why on earth would she ever need to steal anything?
‘It had to be those street punks who tricked Hallie–a girl who barely knew the ways of the world–into all this trouble.
Kelvin said, “I know you would never do something like that. I heard about the promise you made to the principal. You’re smart and have a strong foundation–I’m sure you’ll ace the monthly exam.”

Hallie choked out, “Do you really trust me, Kelvin?” Caught up in her emotions, she suddenly reached out and grabbed his hand.
The instant their skin touched, Kelvin felt his heart skip a beat, thumping hard in his chest.
Hallie quickly let go, cheeks flaming red. She stammered, “I I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to”
Kelvin slipped his hand into his pocket and said, “It’s fine.”
Hallie asked, “Kelvin, after the teachers go over the key points next week, could you bring me the notebook again?” She looked at him with soft, vulnerable eyes.
Hallie had lost all the trust of her classmates at Sunspire High School; now, Kelvin was the only one she could truly rely on.
She thought, ‘Once I get back to school, if I study with Kelvin every day, we’ll see if those other girls dare bad–mouth me in
front of him.’
Hallie’s gentle, trusting gaze made Kelvin feel genuinely needed. Being relied on like that gave him a rush–suddenly, he was the main character, the center of her world.
He nodded and said, “Leave it to me. I’ll make sure you get all the key points every single day.”
Just as he finished speaking, Kelvin caught a glimpse of Edith gracefully coming down the stairs.
He hadn’t seen Edith in days, and somehow he found that she looked even more gorgeous than before. He thought, ‘No wonder everyone at school keeps saying she should replace Hallie as campus queen.”
Kelvin couldn’t help but stare at Edith, totally entranced for a few seconds.
Hallie immediately went on high alert. Not wanting Kelvin’s attention to wander to Edith, she tugged at his sleeve and said, “I ran into a math problem yesterday and just couldn’t figure it out. Can you help me take a look?”
Kelvin snapped out of it, a bit embarrassed. He replied, “Yeah, sure.”
Hallie opened her notebook, pointing right at the tricky math question.
Kelvin didn’t even glance at the math problem–his focus was locked on Edith. He watched her grab milk from the fridge and then gulp it down in one go before heading straight upstairs. She never once looked his way.
At Sunspire High School, wherever Kelvin went, he was always the center of attention for every girl in sight. This was the first time he’d ever been completely overlooked.
Kelvin felt an unexpected sting of frustration. Out of nowhere, he found himself wanting to call out to Edith just to get her to talk to him. But they barely knew each other, and he honestly had no excuse to make her stop.
Just then, the System said. Mission complete. Host, you have successfully won back the suitor’s heart. Reward: enhanced sense of smell |
Edith stumbled, almost losing her balance when the System’s reward hit her out of nowhere. She grumbled inwardly, ‘All I did was go downstairs and drink some milk literally nothing else How does that count as completing the mission?”
