Chapter 28 You’re Gonna Be a Godmother

Sharon lifted her chin proudly. “Of course. Once the baby’s born, I’m gonna be the godmother.”

“Obviously. Even if you didn’t want to, I’d still make the baby call that.”

“Haha! I’ve got a goddaughter now!”

Then Sharon suddenly remembered something. “Wait, is it a boy or a girl in there?”

Becky gently stroked her round belly and smiled warmly. “Doesn’t matter. I’ll love them either way.

“Me too.”

“Hehe, kind of funny, huh? We sound like a couple talking about whether we’re having a boy or a girl!”

Becky couldn’t help but laugh.

These were the kind of conversations she was supposed to be having with the baby’s father… but here she was, having them with her best friend instead.

“Sharon, I don’t know exactly when I’ll go into labor. If you’ve got work, don’t feel like you have to take time off.”

She knew Sharon had just started a new job, and the new boss was known to have a nasty temper. Taking too much time off might get her chewed out.

Sharon was just about to mention that. She looked apologetic.

“I couldn’t get the time off. My boss is inhuman-won’t even approve it.”

Becky comforted her. “It’s okay. Just keep working. We’ll deal with it when the time comes.”

“Alright, I’ll give you both my parents’ numbers just in case.”

Sharon had already told Barry and Mary about Becky’s pregnancy.

Mary had been stopping by every few days with home-cooked meals for Becky.

“Got it.”

Becky saved their numbers in her phone.

The day before her due date, Becky got up early, had breakfast, and double-checked her hospital bag.

Once she was sure she hadn’t forgotten anything, she relaxed a little.

She’d found a maid through an agency, and the woman was supposed to arrive early, but called last minute to say she’d be delayed by two days.

So Becky made herself a big breakfast, then walked around the apartment to help digest.

Her phone chimed.

It was a message from Xavier.

Ever since she’d said those over-the-top, sappy things to him, Xavier seemed scared-he only texted now, never called.

“The weather’s getting hot. How’s the place you’re staying in? Got air conditioning?”

Becky curled her lips into a smile and replied, “Yeah, both the living room and the bedroom. It’s a nice place.”

Xavier stared at that one line for a long time, not sure how to respond.

In the end, he transferred her another hundred thousand.

“Buy whatever you want. Don’t be stingy.”

Becky honestly thought this ex-husband of hers wasn’t half bad.

Generous to the point of being adorable.

She’d seen plenty of couples who went to war over money after a divorce. Some wouldn’t even pay child support they’d agreed on.

Sure, Xavier had taken back the ring and didn’t split assets with her, but he still sent her money from time to time.

And it was always a hundred grand minimum.

Not bad at all!

She’d put on a cotton dress that morning to make things easier at the hospital. Now the back of it was soaked through.

Mary, having been through this herself, told Barry to grab the hospital bag while she helped Becky into the elevator.

Becky somehow managed to walk all the way to the front of the building.

The cab Barry and Mary had taken was still waiting.

Just as Becky was about to climb in, someone ran up out of nowhere.

“Becky, what’s wrong?”

She turned her head and said through trembling lips, “Let go of me… I… I’m going into labor.”

Jose immediately scooped her up. “I’ll take you to the hospital!”

Barry blinked. “Wait-what’s going on?”

Mary, seeing the handsome man clearly knew Becky, said quickly, “You grab the stuff and follow us in the cab. I’ll ride with them to keep an eye on her.”

Barry nodded.

Thank god Jose wasn’t driving his usual sports car today, but a roomy Maybach instead.

Mary helped Becky into the backseat and kept checking her condition the whole way.

Jose didn’t dare waste a second. “Which hospital?”

Mary gave him the address.

Meanwhile, Sharon saw the missed call and text and bolted out of the conference room-only to run straight into Brendon at the door.

She froze. “What are you doing here?”

Hands in his pockets, Brendon had that casual, rich-kid vibe. “This is my company. Why wouldn’t I be here?”

Sharon’s eyes widened. “Wait… you’re the new boss?”
