Brandon and Jade were making a scene outside the hospital room, shouting and pleading to be let into the emergency ward. They were desperate—only by getting inside could they hope to sway public opinion a bit when the journalists arrived.
Unfortunately, the old man remained as unyielding as ever. Even at the end, he showed no sign of letting them through.
“I’ll have them removed right away,” Mr. Brown said quietly, signaling the bodyguards at the door to escort Brandon and Jade out.
The patriarch was clearly at the end of his rope. All he wanted was to spend his final moments talking with Alicia; the last thing he needed was Brandon and Jade’s wailing disrupting what little peace he had left.
But the two of them were relentless, throwing tantrums and refusing to leave. With the press waiting outside, they had already abandoned all sense of dignity.
Inside, the family attorney and a notary certified the transfer of the entire estate to Alicia. After signing the documents, Alicia glanced anxiously at Clayton.
Clayton may have been adopted, but for years he had devoted himself to the White family. Alicia had assumed… Well, even if the old man didn’t leave him shares in the company, surely he would give Clayton something.
A few of the other board members exchanged worried looks, their eyes flickering to Clayton.
Clayton had always been loyal, doing everything he could for the old man and for Alicia. How could it be that, in the end, he was left with nothing?
“Sir, with all due respect...” Mr. Brown couldn’t hold his tongue any longer. “Mr. Clayton has worked tirelessly for the company. Surely—”
They needed to give him something. Alicia was just a young woman freshly back from abroad; it would already be a challenge for her to win over the company and keep everyone in line. If Clayton were to be driven away now, Alicia would be surrounded by opposition on all sides.
“I have my own plans,” the old man rasped, his cloudy gaze sharpening for a moment. He squeezed Alicia’s hand, then reached out with trembling fingers to take Clayton’s. “Clayton… There’s nothing I can leave you. Alicia is my only granddaughter, so I leave her in your care.”
He’d always intended, from the very beginning, for the real Nicole to marry Clayton.
This way, Clayton’s loyalty—and his future—would remain bound to the White family.
“Grandpa…” Alicia stared at Clayton, thrown off by how quickly Reginald seemed to be playing matchmaker.
