With dirt on her checks, Claudia shoved a bunch of ignitable papers to Sterling. Her smile was so warm that it almost melted him.

Burn them, she told him. Sterling, from here on, it’s all good days.”

Then, she muttered with a pout, Shame it’s raining tonight. It would’ve been perfect to just burn the whole house down.”

Yeahshe clearly knew how to torch a place.

Sterling smirked and lit the fire, doing exactly what she asked.

As the photos curled and blackened in the flames, the firelight flickered in his eyes, and old memories hit him all at once.

He saw the Romerostwisted, hateful faces inside the mansion. He saw Isabella clinging to him, sobbing in a wrecked car. In the dark forest, a defenseless little wolf cried out. And at last, Claudia burst through the door, glowing like a beacon.

She was right. Things would be better from now on.

He hadn’t been able to protect his mother when he was small, but he’d never leave Claudia’s side from now on.

If anyone dared to cross them, he’d turn them into ashes.

He was ready to be the dragon guarding his treasure.

By the time they shut up the smokestained wing of the house for good, the storm outside had nearly blown away.

Sterling led Claudia home.

The same girl who had been full of fire, knocking down walls and starting bonfires in the middle of the night, was already dozing off the moment they left Romero Manor.

In the car, as it slid through the quiet night, Sterling cradled her and kissed her forehead softly.

All the darkness from that cursed place was finally behind them.

But it wasn’t only the manor they walked away from. Donovan, who had been rushed to the hospital, was out of their world as well.

The young couple had just survived a crazy night, completely caught up in each other. As for the old man hanging between life and death? He never even crossed their minds.

Or maybe it wasn’t that they forgot himthey just didn’t care.

Donovan was only paying for everything he’d done. His debts were too heavy.

The only people hanging around were his socalled loving family, already fighting over the inheritance in front of the operating room.

When word came that Donovan had made it, no one cheered. They just looked around at each other, unsure if they should be glad or disappointed.

Seventh floor, hospital.

Fiona, who had stayed up the whole night but still looked sharp, ran into Yvonne outside the restroom. Yvonne had shown up late, skipping dinner.

The two locked eyes from a short distance, stood in silence for a few seconds, and then walked past one another without even a nod.

Back in the ward, Donovan was awake.

He ignored the crowd and fixed his gaze on Fiona, who had just walked in.

When he first met her, he hadn’t known her real identity.

She had been young, attractive, clever, knew her limits, and wasn’t after money. He had even thought about marrying her.

But once he discovered she was tangled with a few of his sons, he wanted her gone.

Still, once things got started, there was no stopping it.

Everything happened so fast.

Leon ended up dead. Waylon lost himself in obsession.

Fiona had stirred up plenty, yet because she understood people so well, she came out without a

scratch.

Donovan often wished he had cut her off earlier, but his worry for Waylon had stopped him.

Now the chance was there again, but age had dulled his edge. He didn’t have it in him anymore.

He shut his eyes briefly.
