Did Claudia really think ruining Lydia’s reputation would make her successful?

In Maverick’s eyes, a neglected daughter of the Lancasters was someone meant to be controlled by him. He believed that even if he hit Claudia today for Lydia’s sake, her family would just tell them to make peace afterward.

He gave a cold laugh. “I prepared one room per person. Claudia, you’re not really shameless enough to insist on taking someone else’s, are you?”

As for Eunice’s offer to pay ten times the price, he didn’t care. Money wasn’t a problem. After all, he’d booked out the entire Serenity Peaks Resort–no one could get a room even if they tried. If Claudia didn’t want to sleep in a tent, she’d have to go down the mountain.

Maverick looked at her with contempt. He figured she was so poor she probably couldn’t even afford a cab fare.

But prejudice blinds people. He completely ignored the diamond necklace around her neck that alone could’ve bought half the resort.

In his mind, Claudia would always be the quiet, unwanted daughter of the Lancasters–the one who couldn’t even afford the newest smartphone.

“You either stay in the tent or sleep out in the woods. Or,” he said smugly, “you can beg me, and maybe I’ll sponsor your cab fare. How about ten times the usual price?”

The other classmates, who didn’t know much about the feud between wealthy families, exchanged uneasy looks. They’d only recently learned how wrong they’d been about Claudia all these years, and guilt twisted in their stomachs.

A few girls, angered by Maverick’s arrogance, were ready to grab Claudia and Eunice and leave to hold their own private get–together.

But others–those from families as powerful as Maverick’s–just gave him odd looks. From the moment he started throwing insults, they’d been watching him with pity.

They had a feeling someone had deliberately fed Maverick half the story. Whoever told him about Lydia’s downfall must’ve had a grudge against the Sheldons.

Because if Maverick knew the whole story, he wouldn’t be acting like this.

Did he know what really happened at that infamous birthday party?

Eunice was about ready to scream at Maverick for being an idiot, but he didn’t notice the warning looks from everyone else. He was too focused on Claudia, who stood silent and calm before him.

“If you want to stay,” he said smugly, “then post a public apology online to Lydia. After that, you can join the reunion.”

He tilted his chin with a mocking smile. “So, what’s it gonna be? You leaving or what?”

Before Claudia could answer, a startled voice broke in.

“What? Ms. Lancaster, you’re leaving already?”

It was Amelia Kirby, the resort’s guest services manager. She stood near the crowd holding a glass of grapefruit juice—the kind Claudia always drank—and looked horrified.

“Ms. Lancaster, was there something wrong with our service?” she asked anxiously.

The memo from above said Claudia would be staying for at least two days, maybe longer.

So why is she leaving after less than half an hour?
