When Maverick saw the first car coming up from the foot of the mountain, he immediately told his driver to flag it down.

The driver waved frantically, and the car slowed to a stop. The window rolled down, revealing a woman in the driver’s seat.

Maverick frowned. She looked a little familiar, but he couldn’t place her.

The car wasn’t anything fancy, so he figured she probably wasn’t from Liberty City’s elite circles.

He lifted his chin and said flatly, Hey, can I borrow your car to get down the mountain? I’ll pay you ten thousand dollars.

Sally glanced at his messy hair first. When she realized he wasn’t the blond she remembered, her eyes landed on his arrogant face instead.

Her lips pressed together. Some things never changed a person’s nature didn’t just get better

over time.

She restarted the car.

Tell your guy to move,” she said coldly. Or I’ll just run him over.

As soon as she said it, the car lurched forward a few inches.

Maverick’s driver jumped aside in panic before Maverick could say a word.

Maverick shot him a glare but couldn’t do anything except watch the only car he’d seen in hours drive away. His face twisted with anger as shouted curses at the disappearing taillights.

Figures. Every woman I meet today is trouble.

Up ahead, Sally kept her eyes on the rearview mirror, expression blank as she watched Maverick shouting by the roadside. Some ugly and unwanted memories started to surface.

In a way, she and Claudia had crossed paths because of Maverick.

Back in high school, their class and several honors classes had organized a group trip to Serenity Peaks. Sally, as class rep, had to handle most of the chores.

Her parents were just regular factory workers, and she had a younger brother whom they spoiled rotten.

The teachers were tired of dealing with them, so when Sally volunteered, they happily handed it over.

It helped her scholarship chances, but it also made her everyone’s goto errand girl.

And the worst of them all was Maverick.

He was always trying to impress Lydiabuying her drinks, carrying her booksbut he never did it himself. He’d order Sally to do it for him, no matter if she was busy, studying, or even if it was pouring rain outside.

Unlike other students who at least paid or said thanks, Maverick would just toss his money on the ground.

Funny thing was, he also paid the mostespecially if Lydia happened to smile at him that day.

During that school trip at Serenity Peaks, they didn’t stay at a hotel but camped out, because Lydia wanted to watch the stars in the wild.

Sally had her period that day and felt awful, but Maverick wouldn’t let her take the night off- he needed her around just in case.”

By dinnertime, she was alone near the cliffside, prepping barbecue ingredients.

Then she suddenly felt something wet behind her.

Her heart sank. Panicking, she reached into her backpack for a small package, but before she could take one out, a hand snatched it away.

The boy’s face was red as he held up her sanitary pads. Perfect. You have some. I’ll borrow them for Lydiashe needs one right now.”

Then he dropped a hundreddollar bill at her feet.

Sally sat frozen on a rock, clutching her aching stomach. She grabbed his wrist desperately.

No! Give it back!
