For a teenage boy, asking around for feminine products and then fighting a girl over the same pack of pads was already humiliating enough. So Maverick just wanted to get out of there as fast as he could. He didn’t care what Sally needed.

Just deal with it,he muttered impatiently, shoving her to the ground.

He then handed the pack of pads to Lydia. Sally saw Lydia wrinkle her nose in disgust and say something under her breath. Maverick immediately tried to soothe her, speaking softly and pointing toward the bottom of the hill. Lydia’s mood finally improved, and she walked away with the pads in hand.

That cheap pack never made its way back to Sally. After using what she needed, Lydia simply threw the rest away.

Sally sat by the cliff, frozen in place.

She didn’t have any friends to turn to, no one she could ask for help.

The dampness beneath her spread, staining even more of her clothes. Meanwhile, a group of boys moved toward the only path she’d have to take to get back.

Even a quiet, withdrawn girl still had her pride.

The sky was darkening, the air turning cold. Her eyes filled with tears, and even the cramping pain in her stomach seemed to fade into the background.

She stared blankly into the darkness below the cliff, lost and hopeless. Is being poor really the same as being worthless? Does poverty mean even dignity is a luxury I couldn’t afford?

It was just a pack of cheap pads to themsomething they could toss away without a thought.

Behind her, the sound of laughter and music grew louder. The smell of grilled food filled the air, and the stars above were bright and beautiful. Yet she felt like a rat hiding in the gutter, praying for their laughter to end so she could disappear.

When she was shivering so hard that her teeth chattered, someone draped a jacket over her

shoulders.

Sally turned around. It was herthe girl everyone whispered about. The one said to be rude, wild, and impossible to get along with. The girl looked down at her, then pointed at Sally’s face and her stomach. You feeling sick?she asked.

Sally recognized her. That was Claudiathe girl who was rumored to be Lydia’s cousin.

Most students avoided her. The few who didn’t were the infamous bad girlWhitney from another class and Jasper, the popular campus hunk everyone admired.

The three of them made an odd trio, but somehow it worked.

Sally once saw Lydia try to invite Jasper to lunch, only for him to coldly turn her down.

Jasper, who was perfect in every way, was only ever gentle with Claudia.

Sally had caught that cold, jealous look in Lydia’s eyes more than once when she watched them together.

Sally never thought Claudia was truly badbut she didn’t dare get close to her either. Life was already hard enough without more drama.

Still, Claudia’s life didn’t look easy,

either.

Sally could survive by keeping her head down, doing chores, and swallowing insults. But Claudia was constantly surrounded by Lydia’s admirersaggressive, mean boys who treated her like prey. Claudia wasn’t the type to bow her head to anyone, and that only made things
