Claudia was having so much fun at the shopping mall, treating Sterling like a real–life doll. She had discovered a new hobby–mixing and matching clothes for her boyfriend.
Some things never changed–boyfriends still had to be good–looking.
Having a handsome boyfriend made everything more fun to dress up. No matter what outfit she chose, even a plain outfit looked perfect on him.
She looked at their reflections in the mirror. They were wearing matching, casual couple outfits. Sterling caught her gaze and smiled. “Let’s buy these.”
Claudia hesitated, looking at the huge pile of shopping bags on the store couch.
“Don’t worry. Just have them delivered it all to the house,” Sterling said casually.
Another win for their shopping trip. The store manager couldn’t stop smiling.
Sensing Sterling’s mood, the store manager was about to pick out another set of matching outfits when another good–looking young couple walked in.
“Claudia?” Jasper said, surprised to see her.
When he noticed their outfits, a flash of jealousy went through him.
His blind date looked confused at his sudden pause, then noticed the couple inside. They looked so perfect together. Her eyes sparkled. “Should we try outfits like that too?”
She noticed the way Jasper was looking at Claudia and asked, confused, “Do you know her? Who’s she?”
Jasper snapped out of his thoughts.
He looked at the quiet couple staring back, pressed his lips together, and his jaw tightened. “Just an old friend.”
“Huh? But you two…
”
The girl wanted to say, You’re staring at her way too much for just an old friend.
But before she could, a familiar, excited voice shouted, “Jasper!”
The familiar voice made him freeze.

She had come for a small tea party, a gathering of local socialites. But the people who used to flatter her now acted like she was sick.
Some even looked at her clothes and laughed, saying the Lancasters were about to go broke. Couldn’t she even buy this season’s outfits?
One person even asked her on purpose what prison life was like, what crimes her cellmates had committed, as if comparing her to them.
Lydia had never felt so humiliated.
For a few seconds, she honestly thought the world outside prison wasn’t much better than the cramped cells in prison.
In prison, people fought with their fists. Out here, they were experts at hurting you with words.
Two months with a criminal record didn’t seem long, but it had ruined her whole life.
The Lancasters kept saying they felt “guilty” and “owed” her. When Claudia took all the blame, they sat high on their moral pedestal and treated her perfectly.
But when they had to deal with the problems Lydia caused, all that kindness disappeared. Their faces went cold, and they stopped handing out money like before.
Yesterday, Lydia had hinted that she needed a new outfit for today’s tea party. The Lancaster men didn’t care. Lottie just gave her a few old clothes, none of which fit someone of Lydia’s age, and none of the jewelry was right for a young woman like her.
