Hailey jumped in again, scoffing. “Quinton, bet you don’t even know. Ms. Lancaster is the real daughter, but she’s not even half as good as the adopted one. Her own family can’t stand her. How could someone raised like that have any manners?”

“That’s true. My parents didn’t teach me much. They’re just biased and clueless.

“Guess that’s why Sterling and I get along. His dad never taught him either.”

Her blunt words dragged both Sterling and Quinton into it.

Quinton’s face turned bright red. He smacked the arm of his wheelchair so hard that the sound echoed through the room.

He and his son had never gotten along because of old grudges.

Now that Sterling ran the family, no one cared if Quinton tried to exert his influence. That regret ate him alive.

His eyes burned with fury. “Don’t get too full of yourself. Crushing the Lancasters is nothing to

me.”

Claudia only shrugged. “Sure, but you all heard it. My family doesn’t like me. They even gave my shares to my adopted sister. I’m not getting a dime. If you want to take them down for me, I’ll probably thank you for settling the score for me.”

Damn! She’s so tough and totally untouchable!

The Romero family was seething.

Quinton looked like he was about to blow a fuse.

Sterling chuckled, covering Claudia’s mouth lightly. He gave a half–hearted apology. “Sorry, Claudia is just playful. She doesn’t mean it.”

Then, he put on an act and scolded her, “My dad’s legs are already messed up. Don’t tick him off so badly that he has a stroke. And who knows if my stepmom would bother taking care of him, even with their so–called undying love?”

Winnie’s expression darkened.

Why am I being dragged into their father–son mess?

She was fuming. Since Quinton’s heart was acting up, she pushed her husband out with a dark

face.

“Let Sterling strut around high and mighty if he wants.” The day he stumbled, she’d make sure that brat was treated worse than he ever was as a kid.

Once they left, the others finally calmed down and stopped acting so hostile.

Donovan hadn’t said a word since all the drama began. He just sat there, stiff and gloomy, trapped in his own thoughts.

Smack in the middle of the mess, Claudia was totally unfazed. She tugged on Sterling’s sleeve and whined, “So, when are we eating? I’m starving.”

Her breakfast gnocchi was long gone, and she was desperate for something more filling.

Sterling gave her nose a playful squeeze. “Chill, I’ll never let you go hungry.”

Then, he glanced at Nelson, who checked Donovan first. With no objections, Nelson started serving food.

The tension around the table was thick, but the only ones smiling were the pair who had just won the day.

Sterling was glowing, doting on Claudia. He kept piling food onto her plate and even peeled shrimp for her.
