Irene scoffed. “I might not know everything, but I have eyes. If you dared to do it, why are you afraid of people talking about it? What a hypocrite! I must have been blind to like you back then.”
Seeing Jasper’s gaze grow darker and more dangerous, Irene still didn’t know when to stop. She lifted her chin and kept mocking him.
A sharp slap suddenly landed on the back of her head. “Shut up!”
“What the fuck? Mom!”
‘Who are you swearing at?!” Another slap followed, this time to her back.
The force was so strong it made Irene stumble forward, nearly falling flat.
This damn girl! Can’t leave her alone for a minute without her causing trouble.
I’m gonna sew up that filthy mouth of hers one day.
“Sorry about that,” Agnes said with a bright smile while dragging her daughter by the arm. “Irene doesn’t know any better. I’ll apologize on her behalf and properly discipline her at home.”
She was an elder, and Jasper had no choice but to swallow his anger. Still, his face turned darker
than a storm.
Irene was reluctantly pulled away by Agnes.
She hadn’t even finished enjoying the show yet.
…
On the other side, the baby–faced girl and the one in the yellow dress slipped through the crowd and came up to Claudia.
They had already handed their gifts to the Lancasters‘ butler, Hubert Smith, when they entered.
But they still felt they had to go up to Claudia and wish her a happy birthday in person.
The girl they saw tonight was so different from the rumors, and they trusted their own judgment more than idle gossip.
Besides, with a face that stunning, it was impossible to dislike her.

Giggling together, the two girls walked over arm in arm, then wished Claudia with earnest sincerity.
Claudia blinked in surprise, then broke into a smile. “Thank you.”
She hadn’t expected the first birthday wish tonight to come from them.
The baby–faced girl stretched out her hand. “We didn’t get a chance to introduce ourselves earlier. I’m Kayla Tate.”
Claudia took her hand. “I’m Claudia.”
“Hahaha, we’ve long heard of you.” Kayla laughed and teased playfully.
The girl in the yellow dress smiled and extended her hand too. “I’m Rainie Spencer.”
As she watched Claudia’s smile, she suddenly added, “I don’t think the Lancasters deserve you.”
Her face looked sweet and gentle, yet her words were startlingly blunt.
Claudia froze for a second, then smiled slyly. “I think so too.”
The three girls shared a laugh. They were as radiant as flowers, drawing a roomful of stares.
When Kayla and Rainie left and Sterling finally broke free from the crowd that had surrounded him, he returned to Claudia’s side.
He noticed her staring thoughtfully at the two women’s backs. “You like them?”
Claudia nodded. “I do.”
For the first time in years–aside from Whitney and Jasper–she had felt genuine kindness from people in this circle, and it wasn’t because of who stood behind her.
In the past, most people who knew her identity disliked and even hated her because of their affection for and admiration of Lydia.
