Shock aside, a group of people suddenly lit up with excitement.
It was as if they had just discovered a shortcut to pleasing Sterling.

As Lydia and the others were half–dragged inside in humiliation, they noticed a crowd of people–those same people who usually acted so high and mighty–now shamelessly flattering Claudia in every possible way.
The moment Lydia saw that girl glowing in the center of attention, her gaze dimmed.
Something had gone terribly wrong tonight. Every step Claudia took was completely outside her plan.
Originally, she had arranged that during the birthday greetings, she would tell Jasper that she was stepping out to fetch a gift she had specially prepared for him and Claudia’s engagement.
Then, using that excuse to leave, she would be “kidnapped” by Preston’s family.
Jasper, knowing she went to get the gift, would blame himself for giving them the chance. Everyone else would also believe the Woods targeted her because they thought she was responsible for Preston’s death, venting their anger on her.
Since Jasper owed Preston his life, there was no way he could stand by and do nothing.
If he broke his promise in public once again, Claudia’s pride would never allow her to tolerate the engagement continuing.
To save face and salvage the situation, both families would be forced to swap brides at the last
moment.
That would end things between Claudia and Jasper for good.
She had also planned to discover her “worsening illness” that very night.
She knew Jasper’s limits. Once or twice, he might still feel guilty for her. But if she used the same excuse to block his marriage three or four times, his patience would run out.
But with the official title of his fiancée, she would no longer need to feign sickness.
Yet the Woods truly did appear, only not as planned. Instead of staging a kidnapping far from the Lancasters, they showed up right at the back door of the villa, pressing a knife to her neck.
As promised, they drew Jasper out too, taunting her: “Preston is already dead. Only in your hysteria would you mistake another man for him,” trying to make her break down.

Chapter 95 Lydia’s Schemes

They went on, cursing the two of them as adulterers, claiming that maybe they had been scheming together all along and deliberately lured Preston out to sea to kill him.
They hurled the cruelest words they could, while Preston’s grief–stricken mother, Beatrice Wood, lost all control like a madwoman.
The two of them were caught completely off guard.
Jasper, flustered, tried to restrain the Woods while carefully comforting Lydia.
In the end, Beatrice suddenly calmed down. Jasper, feeling he owed Preston his life, was always more tolerant toward her. He could only watch helplessly as they left.
Because she hadn’t been kidnapped, Jasper simply placed her in a lounge and hurried back.
Without him being delayed, Lydia could only hope that during the time she was absent, the engagement had been ruined.
There was one more thing. She had secretly let Quade in.
He had once told her strange things like, “I’ll avenge you,” “The Lancasters will only have one daughter,” and “Claudia is as good as dead.”
She knew he hated Claudia.
She didn’t ask about his plans, nor did she intervene directly, but she made things a bit easier for him.
There was nothing wrong with keeping her hands clean while adding an extra layer of security to her own scheme.
But the moment Quade stumbled into the lounge and lunged at her, Lydia knew everything had gone wrong. He had been clearly drugged.
Useless Quade! His scheme had backfired and dragged her down with him.
What made her even angrier was that she got dragged into it.
Seething with fury, Lydia hadn’t held back when she struck him.
At worst, Zane could take the blame.
What she hadn’t expected was the terrible timing. Everyone had witnessed it with their own
