Marcus seemed to realize he had overstepped. He released her.
Natalic immediately went to the door and locked it. When she turned back, he was lounging on the sofa, the picture of casual case.
She walked back over to him. “Why did you come back?” she asked in a low voice.
“James mentioned you had a follow–up with my grandfather today. I thought I’d try my luck.” He reached out, his hand circling her waist, and pulled her close. “Because I wanted to see you.”
Whether it was his words or the sudden proximity, a wave of panic washed over her. She tried to shift away. “This isn’t appropriate.”
He moved with her, his expression turning cold. His dark eyes seemed to swallow the light in the room. “After what we’ve done, what’s left to be…”
“Don’t,” she said quickly, her hand flying up to cover his mouth.
Footsteps sounded from the hallway. It wasn’t Jackson, but likely one of the maids.
Marcus lifted her in one smooth motion and carried her into the bathroom. He kicked the door shut behind them, enclosing them in the small, private space.
He set her down on the vanity, then tilted her chin up, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips. “Tell me the truth. Have you and he ever been together in this room?”
She looked up at him, her expression a mixture of shock and disbelief. When she didn’t answer, a low, rough laugh rumbled in his chest. “So you have…”
She didn’t want to think about the past. “That was years ago. I don’t even remember.”
“You don’t remember, or you don’t want to tell me?” His voice was a low, dangerous murmur, wrapping around her, holding her captive. Her legs dangled on either side of him as he leaned against the vanity, his hands on her back to steady her.
She bit her lip, her stubborn silence a clear answer.
His voice dropped even lower. “It doesn’t matter. I’ll help you replace those old memories, one by one.”
Her head snapped up, her eyes meeting his, which were filled with a raw, predatory hunger. A second later, his mouth was on hers.
Her hands, resting on the cool marble of the vanity, clenched into tight fists. Her heart hammered against her ribs. He deepened the kiss, his tongue seeking entrance, demanding more.
