Chapter 170 Back Where It Belongs
“Jackson. haven’t you seen the news?” Victoria demanded, shoving her phone onto his desk. “How could something this big happen without anyone telling you?”
A shadow crossed Jackson’s face. He picked up the phone and scanned the headlines. “I wasn’t feeling well today, so I stayed home from the office. I’ve been writing. What is all this? Who exposed you?”
“Who else could it be?” Victoria’s voice was sharp with resentment. “Natalic, of course.”
A flicker of surprise went through him. Years ago, when Victoria had taken a liking to the hairpin he was using as a display piece in an antique shop, he had simply taken it. He’d told Natalie it had been stolen. It was the only way he could think of to give it to Victoria. He had never told Victoria the truth of its origins, so how did she know?
“How did you know the hairpin was Natalie’s?” he asked.
Victoria’s composure faltered, a flicker of nervousness in her eyes. She took a moment to collect herself before answering. “I saw Ms. Foster wear it once, a long time ago. I fell in love with it then. When I saw it on display in your shop, I only mentioned in passing that I liked it. I never imagined you would actually get it for me…”
He seemed to accept her explanation, nodding slowly.
“Jackson, she did this to deliberately humiliate me, didn’t she?” Victoria’s expression crumpled into one of profound sadness.
Seeing her distress, his face hardened. “Go home for now,” he said, his voice low. “I will take care of this. I promise, I’ll give you a satisfactory answer.”
“Okay.” Victoria nodded and quickly left.
Aiden, who had been listening quietly, came over to his father. “Daddy, did Mommy really like that hairpin so much? She already gave it to Victoria, but she still wants it back.”
Jackson looked at his son, his voice dropping. “Maybe. It did belong to her, after all.”
“But Victoria really likes it,” Aiden pouted. “You can’t just take back a gift.”
“Your mother has always been one to fuss over every little thing,” Jackson said, a note of irritation in his voice, his expression growing colder. “You know that.”
