Chapter 172 At All Costs
It was the first time she had ever truly resisted him, and he found himself inexplicably irritated.
“What?” he said, his voice rising. “Are you really going to just sleep with me and then-”
Natalie’s hand shot out, covering his mouth. The movement brought them even closer.
“Don’t say another word,” she hissed. “The child and Lucy are upstairs.”
The urgency in her voice was palpable. As they stood pressed together, Marcus felt a hard object in her pocket. He reached for it. “What’s in your pocket?”
Natalie flinched back, putting several feet of distance between them before his fingers could even touch the fabric.
Her reaction was so extreme it took him by surprise. “What are you hiding? Why are you being so secretive?”
“It’s nothing,” she said, and began to gently push him toward the door. “It’s late. You should go home and get some rest.”
He stopped at the door and looked back at her. “Was it a gift from another man?”
Natalie froze. She was beginning to realize that Marcus was an incredibly suspicious man. Since their night together, even without a defined relationship, his possessiveness over her had grown exponentially.
“No. You’re imagining things.”
Seeing that she wasn’t going to say more, he didn’t press the issue.
“Be careful on your way out,” she said, waving.
He gave her a final, unreadable look, then turned and left. Natalie closed the door behind him and let out a long, slow breath.
The next morning, Marcus texted her secondary phone, asking where to send the pendant. Natalie sent him the address of Lucy’s friend and then called Lucy to ask her friend to sign for the package.
He reached out, his long fingers closing around her arm, and pulled her toward the break room.
