Sunny's heart hammered in her chest. So it was him who pulled strings to get her trending.
Was it all to help her?
"Stellan knows Jerry too?" she blurted out.
Vicky paused, then chuckled. "What are you thinking, sweetheart? If he knew Mr. Lawson, he wouldn't have needed me to ask his lawyer friend, right?"
"Mr. Lawson was sticking up for you!"
Sunny's mind went blank.
How many times had he gone out of his way for her now?
Last night's almost flirty messages forced her to rethink what was really going on between her and Stellan.
If it was all just mutual convenience, she could use him without a second thought.
But what if he was serious about her?
She couldn't fall for him so quickly—so what did she have to give back in return?
While she stayed silent for a minute, her thoughts raced.
"Sunny? Can you hear me?"
Snapping back to the present, Sunny said, "Oh, Vicky, yeah, I'm here. Sorry, I just remembered something I need to do. I'll call you later, okay?"
Vicky stared at her phone as the call abruptly ended, wondering if she'd done something wrong—again.
Hand pressed to her chest, Sunny took a deep breath. She stepped onto the balcony, let the cool air clear her mind, then dialed his number.
He picked up after barely two rings.
His voice was low and gravelly, still tinged with sleep. "Hello?"
"Hey, Stellan. Sorry, I just woke up. I fell asleep early last night and only just saw your messages," she explained, feeling a twinge of guilt.
"It's fine. I figured you'd gone to bed."
"Yeah."
"Stellan, I—"
"Wait, Stellan." Sunny almost forgot why she'd called in the first place.
"When are you free to go sign the marriage papers?"
She could almost hear his smile as his lips curled up on the other end.
"Oh, I'm not sure yet. I'll have to check my schedule with my assistant."
"Okay, let me know when you find out. And Stellan… thanks for the whole trending topic thing."
So she'd figured it out.
A soft, private smile played on his lips—one she couldn't see. "No need to thank me. Isn't this what a husband's supposed to do?"
"You said you'd help me. I can't let you lose, can I?"
Sunny laughed softly. "Thanks. See you next week."
The next time they met, it would be to get their marriage license.
