"Wyatt, she was just helping out a friend—is that really such a big deal? Besides, she's not even part of the legal team on this case. She told me about it in advance. Did Lawson Corporation complain to you? But, Director Harrison, the merger isn't being handled by President Lawson; Stellan himself is overseeing everything."
In other words, if the head of Lawson Corporation hasn't said a word, Magnus has no authority to meddle.
"Nonsense! Isn't Stellan still a Lawson? You think he'd just stand by and watch his own nephew get pushed around by outsiders?"
"Besides, do you even know who the ‘rising star' Mr. Lawson is backing this time? She's about to become the Lawsons' daughter-in-law!"
"Put her on leave. Let her stay quiet for a while. When this blows over, she can come back!"
"Director Harrison, do you realize how damaging it is for her to be suspended?"
He had planned to recommend Sunny for non-equity partnership after this merger was finished. If she really got suspended, how could he possibly bring it up then?
Alfven's tone was half warning, half persuasion. "Wyatt, you need to get your priorities straight. Sunny is just your protégé. No matter how much you want to protect her, you have to think about the bigger picture."
Wyatt's frustration was obvious. "Was it Marcus who ran to you again? Director Harrison, is he ever going to stop stirring up trouble? Why don't you just suspend me too while you're at it?"
"Don't be ridiculous! That's enough—I don't want to hear any more about it. You can go. I have a client coming in soon." Alfven dismissed him, exasperated.
When Sunny returned to the office, she saw Wyatt walking out of Director Harrison's office, his expression dark and unreadable.
He spotted her, too. "Come with me to my office."
Sunny caught the hint and followed him without a word.
Xander and Lily Williams watched them go, exchanging uneasy glances.
The mood in their team dropped to a new low.
"Boss," Sunny said quietly. Just looking at his face, she could tell there was little hope for a reversal.
"I'm sorry. This is my fault. If I'd been firm and refused to let you get involved, maybe things wouldn't have come to this. It's all Marcus's doing!"
"For now, just treat this as a vacation. I'll figure something out."
Sunny looked genuinely grateful. "Thanks, Boss. Sorry for dragging you into this mess."
"Don't mention it. We all make mistakes when we're young. Next time you pick a boyfriend, use better judgment, will you? Actually, my cousin just got back from overseas—want me to introduce you two?"
The moment she realized Wyatt wanted to set her up, Sunny shook her head quickly.
"No, Boss, I'm really not interested in dating right now."
"Fair enough. Go travel, clear your head. Consider this a paid break. At most, it'll be a month. As soon as the merger wraps up, I'll make sure you come back."
Sunny smiled. "Alright."
A flicker of determination flashed in her eyes. She wouldn't need a whole month—she'd be back before anyone knew it.
