Stand Me Up? I'll Marry His Billionaire Uncle novel Chapter 39

Sunny was mortified—she wanted nothing more than to bite her own tongue off.

She ducked her head, forcing an awkward laugh. "Uncle Stellan, I was just joking."

Stellan's dark eyes stayed locked on the tips of her ears, which were burning bright red. His low, husky voice grew even rougher as he replied, "I'm not joking."

"You're Tristan's fiancée. To me, that makes you as important as family. I really don't mind."

But Sunny blinked, her wide eyes betraying her true feelings. She minded, very much.

They would never be family. In fact, soon enough, they might barely even see each other—she was about to break off her engagement to Tristan.

With a quiet click, Stellan unlocked the car doors. His voice was even raspier than before. "It's late. Let's get you home."

"Okay."

Obediently, Sunny climbed out of the car and trudged back to her apartment, her heartbeat only now beginning to settle.

She barely had a moment to collect her thoughts before her phone rang—Wyatt was calling.

"Hey, Sunny, did you make it home?" Wyatt's voice was cautious, a little worried.

Sunny smiled. "Yeah, boss, I'm home. You and Xander got back okay too?"

"Yeah, I sent Xander home with a driver. I'm still on my way," Wyatt replied.

He hesitated, then asked, "Sunny, Mr. Lawson didn't do anything weird on the drive, did he?"

Sunny froze, the flush on her cheeks returning. "No, boss! What are you thinking? Mr. Lawson just thought I'd have trouble getting a cab, so he offered me a ride. That's all."

Wyatt sounded relieved. "Good. But, Sunny, did you know Mr. Lawson before tonight?"

Sunny wasn't about to get into the tangled mess between her and the Lawsons. She quickly denied it. "Nope, never met him."

She added, "Tonight was the first time."

Lily Williams, ever the gossip, couldn't help herself. "Hey, hey, how did things go last night?"

Sunny stayed quiet. Xander, oblivious as ever, didn't even seem to remember that Stellan had offered Sunny a ride.

"Not bad," Xander grinned. "Boss has a meeting with Manager Pierce this afternoon—I think we've got this in the bag."

Lily's eyes went wide, and she sucked in a sharp breath. "Already? We're about to land the Lawson Corporation contract?"

In their line of work, celebrating too early was a major jinx.

Sunny shot her a warning look. "Lily, keep your voice down."

Lily quickly clapped her hand over her mouth, but excitement still sparkled in her eyes.

If their boss really could win the Lawson account, their team would finally have a leg up at the firm—maybe even outshine Attorney Lewis and his crew for once.
