Stand Me Up? I'll Marry His Billionaire Uncle novel Chapter 40

When Wyatt returned that afternoon, his expression was hardly pleasant.

He paused by Sunny's desk and rapped his knuckles on the tabletop. "Come to my office."

Sunny followed, her steps light, then quietly closed the office door behind her.

"What's wrong, boss? Rough afternoon?" she asked.

Wyatt nodded. "Yeah. On my way out, I happened to spot Marcus Lewis waiting in the client lounge."

Sunny's face tightened. "No way. Is Attorney Lewis trying to swoop in?"

Wyatt arched an eyebrow, a dismissive huff escaping him. "He wouldn't dare."

But the contract Wyatt had felt confident about just yesterday was suddenly out of reach. That afternoon, Jude Pierce hadn't even brought it up and had gone so far as to claim the decision wasn't his alone to make.

"Anyone can land this contract, but it sure as hell won't be Marcus," Wyatt said flatly.

Wyatt and Marcus had always been rivals at the firm, their competition equal parts open and covert. Poaching clients and fighting for deals wasn't anything new between them.

Sunny pressed her lips together. "Boss, you've got more seniority and experience than Marcus. If Lawson Corporation picks Summit Legal, they'll put you at the top of their list. I wouldn't worry."

She didn't say this because she thought Uncle Stellan would just hand them the contract, but because she genuinely believed in Wyatt's skill.

"I'll stop by Lawson Corporation again in a few days and see what's going on. Alright, back to work."

The rest of the afternoon slipped by in a blink, and before Sunny realized it, she was already ten minutes past quitting time.

She had promised Ms. Jones she'd come by tonight—and she never broke a promise.

Tonight, she was even thinking of taking the opportunity to finally talk to the Lawsons' elders about calling off the engagement. With the wedding fast approaching, putting it off any longer would only make matters worse.

Tristan stood in the grand foyer, his handsome face set in a cold, unreadable mask. Every so often, his gaze flicked to the front door.

He stalked into the entryway, every step bristling with annoyance.

The maid could only sigh and shake her head as she walked away.

Sunny dawdled by her car a while longer, making sure Tristan had gone inside before heading up to the house herself, a small, satisfied smile tugging at her lips.

But just as she reached the steps, a familiar voice called out, "Sunny, were you waiting for me so we could go in together?"

Sunny grimaced inwardly. If she'd known, she would have gone in earlier.

Out of everyone here, the person she wanted to avoid even more than Tristan was Stellan.

Forcing a polite smile, Sunny replied, "Uncle Stellan, you're such a kidder."

Stellan's lips curled in a noncommittal smile. "Come on, let's head in together. The others are probably getting impatient."
