Zara didn't wake up until noon.
"Sunny, did we see my Uncle Stellan at the bar last night?"
Zara's memory was patchy.
Sunny rolled her eyes. "Zara, don't tell me you don't remember?"
Zara rubbed her temples. "Not much, honestly. I remember you ordered a frat boy, I picked the gym bro, then how did Caleb—ugh, that idiot—even show up?"
Caleb: Zara's childhood friend. They'd almost gotten engaged once, but Zara caused such a scene at the engagement party that it all fell apart.
Even Sunny couldn't figure out what those two were now. All she knew was that whenever they met, it was instant fireworks.
"He didn't do anything to you, did he?"
Zara raised her voice. "He wouldn't dare!"
"What about you? Sunny, how did you get home?"
Sunny suddenly remembered her car was still parked in that lot behind the bar.
"Uh, I caught a ride home."
"Good. What a shame, though. Next time, I'll take you somewhere new. I heard there are loads of college guys there."
Sunny gave a sheepish laugh. "Maybe not. I don't actually have a thing for college guys."
"Oh, please. The way you were eyeing that baby-faced cutie last night—come on, we're besties, I get you!"
"Zara." A low, familiar male voice came through the receiver. "Who are you talking to?"
Sunny panicked. "Don't say it's me. Don't you dare."
But Zara didn't even hear her. "Oh, Uncle Stellan. I'm just on the phone with Sunny."
...
Help.
"Oh."
Sunny didn't want to hear anything else. She hung up with a sharp click.
As she was stewing in embarrassment, Xander came over.
"Sunny, Lily and I are both meeting with clients. SkyVault wants someone over there—could you go?"
Sunny fluttered her lashes. "Sure, I'll go."
The contract with SkyVault was up today, the 27th.
Without looking up from the contract, Sunny gave a wry smile. "Work brings me joy. Why would I be mad?"
"Mr. Lawson, the contract's reviewed. Other than the compensation clause at the end—which needs some changes—everything else looks fine. I've marked the revisions; take a look."
Tristan didn't take his eyes off her as he accepted the contract.
"Excellent. Attorney Carrington, as professional as always. Are you really not considering renewing with us? I can double your fee."
Sunny smiled gently at his attempt to throw money at the problem. "Summit Law Firm would be delighted to continue working with SkyVault, but for personal reasons, I can't serve as your lead attorney anymore. Of course, we have plenty of other talented lawyers. If you'd like, I can have Lawyer Fletcher meet with your assistant tomorrow to discuss renewal?"
Tristan's expression turned cold. "That won't be necessary. If Attorney Carrington isn't available, there's no point in renewing."
Sunny had just stood up when Luna pushed open the office door.
"Tristan, I came by to—"
She paused, noticing Sunny in the room.
Her smile froze, awkward. "Oh, Sunny. You're here too. I was just passing by and thought I'd ask Tristan to lunch. Would you like to join us?"
The words sounded polite, but her eyes screamed, Please say no.
Sunny considered messing with her, but decided it wasn't worth it.
All she wanted now was to get as far away from this awkward pair as possible.
