Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 106

After listening to her father, Camila Davis had no idea how to respond. It was like something had wrapped around her throat, making it impossible to speak.

Right when she worried she’d slip up and say something she’d regret, their Uber pulled up to the restaurant.

Grateful for the distraction, Camila quickly changed the subject and ushered her parents out of the car.

This little bistro was always packed, and she hadn’t managed to snag a reservation for a private booth. So, the three of them squeezed into a table in the bustling main dining room instead.

Her parents didn’t mind at all. For them, the ambiance was secondary. What mattered was being together, sharing a cozy meal as a family.

Later, as the food arrived—classic American comfort fare, loaded with roast chicken, mashed potatoes, and the house’s famous meatloaf—Camila dished up generous helpings for her parents. “This is their signature dish, you’ve got to try it. And since you’re here, why not stay a few more days? Lillian’s in school now, so I’ve got some time to show you both around Harrisburg.”

Her mom, Melissa, was delighted. They hadn’t seen Camila and their granddaughter in ages, and truth be told, they’d been hoping for a longer visit all along.

Jerry, her dad, just kept piling more food onto Camila’s plate. “You always loved roast beef, sweetheart. Eat up—put some meat back on those bones.”

“Okay, Dad,” Camila replied obediently, forcing herself to eat more than usual for her parents’ sake.

By the end of the meal, their table was surrounded by laughter and warmth. For the first time in a while, Camila felt almost content.

Near the end, she excused herself to use the restroom. But when she came back, she stopped dead in her tracks.

There, just across the dining room, was Jordan Smith—and not alone. He was with his parents, Sandra Taylor, and a middle-aged couple Camila didn’t recognize, but she could guess: those had to be Sandra’s parents.

The six of them looked perfectly at ease, chatting and smiling as a host led them upstairs to a private room. Jordan was all charm and courtesy, especially with Sandra’s folks—nothing like the distant, chilly way he’d always treated Camila’s parents.
