Barbara Jones just shrugged it off. “What’s so bad about it? Our families go way back, and you and Jordan are practically brothers! Besides, Mason and I have always wanted a grandson, and Daniel is such a sweet kid—it’s hard not to like him.”
Mason Smith looked Daniel up and down, nodding in approval. “Exactly. And with your folks here tonight, why not make it official? Bring our families even closer.”
The guests, who’d been watching the drama unfold, clearly hadn’t expected this twist.
While Camila—the real Mrs. Smith—was causing a scene at the birthday party, threatening divorce, and their actual granddaughter stood right there, the Smiths didn’t spare her a single glance. Instead, they were busy plotting how to officially make Daniel part of the family…
Anyone with half a brain could see what was happening.
This so-called Mrs. Smith and Jordan’s daughter clearly weren’t worth their attention.
Some of the more ambitious guests, eager to cozy up to the Smiths, jumped in right away:
“Little Danny Taylor is such a polite, adorable kid. He’d make a great godson for Mr. Smith!”
“Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Smith on gaining another grandchild!”
“This kid looks sharp—bet he’ll go far. You’re lucky to have him!”
“And Jordan’s daughter has her issues—autism isn’t something you just fix. She’ll need a strong big brother to watch out for her...”
The flood of congratulations rolled through the room, but to Camila Davis, each word was like a dart aimed straight at her heart.
But pain wasn’t what she felt—just a bone-deep chill.
She’d always thought the Smiths were cold, but tonight, they’d outdone themselves. Lillian was their own flesh and blood; they’d never really seen her. Now, they were using her as a prop and planning to bring in another child as their “real” grandchild—right in front of her.
Camila almost laughed. Strangely, she felt calm.
At least she’d never planned to let Lillian stay with the Smiths anyway. Their attitude only proved she’d made the right call.
