Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 147

"Once you’re fully recovered, you can go out as much as you want. But can’t you just hold back for now? Is this really how you want to show you’re getting better?”

Helen Adams shrank back, looking even more miserable.

But she was quick to apologize, her voice small, “I’m sorry, Camila. I know I messed up. Please don’t be mad. I won’t sneak out again, I promise!”

Camila Davis was still annoyed, but she couldn’t really stay mad at her.

Young love was always intense and impulsive—self-control wasn’t exactly their strong suit.

Still, since it had interfered with Helen’s treatment, Camila couldn’t help but give her a gentle scolding.

Helen listened quietly, nodding along.

That’s when Dennis Williams and the Adamses walked in.

The moment they entered, Dennis’s deep, authoritative voice filled the room. “You made a promise, so you need to keep it. Otherwise, there will be consequences.”

Helen’s face lit up when she saw him—she nearly jumped out of bed, forgetting she was supposed to be resting. “Dennis, you’re here too?”

Dennis nodded, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Lie back. Or do you want to end up back in the ER?”

Helen immediately settled back into the pillows, looking sheepish. “No, I don’t.”

Dennis didn’t let her off the hook, though. He warned, “Follow the doctor’s orders. If you sneak out again, your boyfriend might end up getting a talking-to.”

Helen looked so intimidated, she didn’t dare argue.

Camila watched the whole thing, amused. It was like watching a mouse freeze up in front of a cat!

Later, when Helen had been given the all-clear, Camila and Dennis took their leave.

On the way home, Camila asked curiously, “So, are you related to the Adams family, Mr. Williams?”

Dennis shook his head. “No, I served with Helen’s brother, John Adams. He was killed in action overseas a few years ago. Before he died, he asked me to look after his parents and Helen.”

The two of them had a bond forged in battle, so Dennis treated Helen like his own family.

When it became clear Helen’s illness wasn’t psychological, Dennis had helped find different doctors for her.

Nothing worked—no one could even figure out what was wrong.

That was, until he heard about Camila’s reputation as a healer through some contacts at the veterans’ association. That’s when he decided to ask for her help.

Camila nodded, understanding. She figured it worked out well—Dennis was helping her treat Lillian, and she was helping him treat Helen. It seemed fair.

Of course, she still planned to pay Dennis for Lillian’s therapy, once her daughter was fully recovered. She didn’t want to take advantage of him.
