Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 148

Camila Davis let out a sigh and rolled her eyes. “What, are you writing a census report now? I’ve only just met the guy—how would I know how old he is or if he’s got a girlfriend? But I’ll tell you one thing…”

She couldn’t help but picture that impossibly handsome face again. It was almost unfair how good-looking he was.

“He’s gorgeous. Like, seriously, model-level hot.”

Sarah Brown slapped her thigh in mock frustration. “Ugh, if I’d known he was such a hunk, I would’ve knocked on his car window! Missed my chance at some eye candy!”

They both laughed it off, but Sarah quickly found her smile again. “Honestly, leaving Jordan Smith wasn’t the worst thing. Just look at you! Since dumping that loser, every man around you is a total upgrade.”

She nudged Camila playfully. “And you? You’ve got your groove back. If he didn’t appreciate you, that’s his loss. One day, he’ll be the one regretting it.”

But Camila just shrugged. She was so over Jordan Smith. Once the divorce was finalized, they’d barely ever cross paths again, and that suited her just fine.

The two friends chatted as they walked home. The moment they stepped inside, Camila’s daughter Lillian woke up from her nap.

Camila set her down with their golden retriever, Lightning, while she slipped off her coat and got ready to organize her notes for the new medicine she was developing.

As she pulled off her coat, something tumbled from the pocket and hit the hardwood floor. She glanced down and spotted two pieces of candy.

Wait… were these from Mr. Williams? When had he managed to sneak those into her pocket?

Camila couldn’t help but smile. She bent to pick them up and tucked them into her favorite tote bag for a rainy day.

The next morning, over a quick breakfast of coffee and a bagel, Camila wondered whether she should call Dennis Williams, see if he had time for Lillian’s next treatment—she was doing so well lately, and Camila was eager to keep the momentum going.

But before she could reach for her phone, Aaron called first. “Hey, Ms. Davis, Mr. Williams had to rush up north for some urgent work. He asked me to let you know to take good care of Ms. Adams’ treatment while he’s gone. Says he owes you dinner next time he’s back in Harrisburg.”

Camila laughed. “No problem at all. Tell Mr. Williams not to worry—I’ll handle it.”

When she hung up, she couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed, but she knew Dennis Williams was the type to keep his word. If he said he’d see her next time, she trusted he would.

Over the next few days, things at the lab kicked into high gear. Camila was busier than ever, and the collaboration with the Harris Family was finally making progress.

Then came big news: a major government medical project had been awarded to the Wilson Group, and the higher-ups were taking it seriously. Camila and Walter Wilson himself were both invited to the official signing ceremony.

Camila hardly ever went to events like this. Walter, guessing she’d want to skip it, tried to nudge her. “Come on, Camila—you’re the lead researcher. You have to show your face. Besides, with all the new medicines we’re launching, you’ll be in the spotlight a lot more. No backing out.”

She just grinned. “Who said I was backing out?”
