Camila Davis’s eyes narrowed. “Who?”
The police chief gave her a knowing look. “That friend of hers…”
Camila’s expression darkened as realization hit.
Sandra Taylor. Of course.
The chief continued, “We couldn’t pin anything on her—no solid evidence—so she’s off the hook, for now. But she’s pulling strings behind the scenes, trying to find a loophole for Nora Lewis. If things go her way, Nora might actually get a reduced sentence.”
Camila clenched her jaw. There wasn’t much she could do.
In most malpractice cases, even if a patient died, the sentence rarely exceeded three years. Nora had definitely harmed those kids, but no one had died—technically, there was still room for negotiation.
And Sandra Taylor? She was the mastermind, the one who’d dragged Nora into this mess. There was no way she’d just sit back and watch Nora take the fall. If Nora ever turned up any proof against her, Sandra would go down, too.
As these thoughts raced through her head, Camila’s expression went ice-cold.
Sandra Taylor. One way or another, she’d make her pay.
Swallowing her anger, Camila managed a polite, “Thank you for letting me know, Chief. I appreciate your help.”
The chief waved it off. “Don’t mention it. Mr. Williams personally asked me to keep an eye on this. I’m just doing my job.”
Camila nodded and, after hanging up, shot a quick message to Aaron to fill him in. She also texted Dennis Williams to thank him. If he hadn’t stepped in, they’d still be spinning their wheels.
Aaron replied almost instantly: “Mr. Williams says you’re welcome. By the way, he wanted me to let you know—there’s an auction in Harrisburg tonight. One of the items is a rare medicinal herb that could really help Lillian’s recovery. He can’t make it himself, so he hopes you can go and bid on it.”
Camila didn’t hesitate. “Of course,” she replied.
Moments later, Aaron sent her the auction catalog.
Camila scrolled through and found the herb. Starting bid: three hundred grand.
She sucked in a breath. That’s steep.
She’d spent most of her savings buying her place. There was no way she could come up with that kind of cash on the spot.
