That night, after a long day of work, Camila and Walter headed off to Whispering Pines Manor.
This was no ordinary auction—it was the kind of exclusive event reserved for the city’s crème de la crème. Only the truly wealthy or well-connected even got an invite.
By the time they arrived, the grand hall was already buzzing with activity. Waiters in crisp uniforms floated around with trays of hors d’oeuvres—mini quiches, stuffed mushrooms, and shrimp cocktails. Laughter and the clinking of champagne glasses filled the air.
Walter Wilson, with his reputation and old-money ties, naturally had a seat reserved up front in the VIP section.
But Camila’s invitation—courtesy of Aaron—was somehow even better. Her seat was right by the stage, practically in the spotlight.
Still, she and Walter decided to sit together, sharing a small table draped with white linen and a little vase of fresh daisies.
Camila was flipping through the glossy auction catalog, barely paying attention to the crowd, when Walter nudged her gently.
She looked up, a question on her lips, only to freeze as she spotted Jordan Smith and Sandra Taylor approaching.
Both looked like they’d stepped out of a magazine ad. Jordan wore a sharp black suit with subtle pinstripes, his expression cool and aloof, radiating power. Sandra was poured into a figure-hugging white dress that showed off every curve, her blond hair styled to perfection. Side by side, they looked almost like they were matching on purpose.
Camila’s throat went dry. Seriously? Did she have to run into these two everywhere?
She frowned and turned away, pretending to study the catalog again.
But Jordan had already seen her. His eyes darkened the second he spotted Camila sitting with Walter. A scowl flickered across his face, and he looked distinctly unhappy.
He’d reached out to her a few times lately, asking about Lillian, but Camila hadn’t responded once. Yet here she was, looking perfectly relaxed, chatting with Walter Wilson.
Sandra, noticing Jordan’s distraction, forced a sweet smile and said, “Well, isn’t this a surprise? Camila, Mr. Wilson seems to really value your company—you two are inseparable these days. The Harris family’s gala, now tonight’s auction… Your new research project must be incredible, huh?”
