Sophia Miller chimed in, “Wayne, I hope you truly appreciate Helen. Even when she was sick, you were all she could think about… She even risked her health just to see you! You must realize just how much she cares for you.”
Wayne Carter’s face grew serious. “I know. I promise, I won’t take her for granted.”
The older couple exchanged a pleased look, satisfied with his sincerity.
Camila Davis had watched the whole exchange and found it pretty fascinating.
Love, she mused, really is different for everyone.
Sometimes, it’s not age that makes someone mature or not—it’s something else entirely.
Maybe, just maybe, these two youngsters would end up really happy.
Camila quietly sent her best wishes their way, only then realizing that Dennis Williams beside her hadn’t said a word throughout.
She glanced over at him.
The man’s profile looked almost sculpted, his lips pressed into a thin line, not a hint of a smile on his face. Even his perfect brows were drawn together in a slight frown.
Camila blinked.
Was Mr. Williams… not happy with Wayne Carter?
She was about to ask, when Dennis suddenly looked her way.
Their eyes met. For a split second, an emotion flickered in his gaze before he quickly smoothed it over. “Is there something on my face?”
Camila felt her cheeks flush.
Was there anything more awkward than getting caught staring?
She shook her head quickly. “No, I just noticed you haven’t said anything.”
Dennis gave a small, amused smile. “Just lost in thought, that’s all…”
Truthfully, he didn’t quite understand how these two young people had gotten to the topic of marriage so fast.
But whether he understood or not, he’d still offer his blessing.
“Congrats, kiddo,” he said to Helen, “I’m happy for you.”
Then he turned to Wayne. “I see Helen as family. You better treat her right.”
His tone was gentle, not a warning—yet somehow, it carried an unmistakable weight.
Wayne sat up a little straighter, not daring to argue.
