Mr. Taylor immediately leaned forward and asked, “You got something on your mind?”
Sandra Taylor nodded, a mischievous grin spreading across her face.
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs and pancakes, the Taylor family—Mr. and Mrs. Taylor and their daughter Sandra—set out to visit the Smiths, arms full of fancy gift baskets.
It just so happened that Lucas Smith was being discharged from the hospital that day. Sandra, of course, played the caring friend to perfection.
Lucas was practically moved to tears by her concern.
“Sandra, you’re the best. Not like that witch, Camila Davis.”
Just thinking about the misery he’d endured these past few days made Lucas’ blood boil.
Mrs. Taylor chimed in at just the right moment. “I always heard Camila was a real sweetheart. But is she actually like that? Was she just putting on an act all this time?”
Barbara Jones, Lucas’s mother, bristled with anger. “She only acted proper when Grandma Smith was around to keep her in check. The minute Grandma passed, Camila showed her true colors! Honestly, letting her marry into the Smith family was the luckiest break she’ll ever get. But instead of being grateful, she’s been nothing but trouble, disrespectful to her elders and tearing the family apart. It’s outrageous!”
Sandra jumped in, her voice soft and soothing. “Barbara, don’t let it get to you. It’s not worth making yourself sick over someone like her.”
Mrs. Taylor nodded, playing along. “Exactly. A good wife brings peace to the household. But if she isn’t, well… she’ll turn the place upside down! Barbara, you deserve to enjoy life, not put up with this nonsense…”
She trailed off, but everyone caught her meaning: Camila didn’t belong in the Smith family.
Barbara wasn’t stupid. She understood the subtext loud and clear.
She replied quickly, “You’re absolutely right. If only Lucas had chosen Sandra, I’d never have to worry about any of this. She’s always been hardworking and sweet. Our families go way back—it would’ve been a perfect match.”
Lucas jumped in, “Hey, it’s not too late. Just kick Camila out. Problem solved.”
