She rushed to open the door, expecting anything but the person standing on her porch.
Her brows knit together. “What are you doing here?”
Barbara Jones, clearly offended by the chilly greeting, snapped, “Obviously, I’m here to talk to you. Aren’t you going to invite me in? Or do you plan to keep me standing out here all day?”
Camila Davis could tell from Barbara’s attitude that this wasn’t a friendly visit. She didn’t budge from the doorway. “How did you even get my address?”
Barbara gave a smug little smile. “Please. Is there anything the Smith family can’t find out in Harrisburg?”
She said it like the Smiths owned the whole town.
Inside the house, Mr. and Mrs. Davis heard raised voices and came out to see what was going on. When they saw who was at the door, both their faces went cold.
Melissa George spoke in a tone that made it clear Barbara was no friend. “Mrs. Smith, what brings you by?”
Barbara bristled. How dare these people act so high and mighty? They were barely scraping by! Did they honestly think they could look down on her?
Camila had no patience for any of this. “Just say what you came here for and get it over with. If you don’t have anything important to say, you can leave. You’re not welcome here.”
Barbara’s face turned red with anger. “Camila Davis, you’re still Jordan’s wife, aren’t you? Is this how you talk to your elders?”
Camila laughed bitterly. “If I remember right, I made it clear I don’t care about being your daughter-in-law. If somebody else wants the job, they can have it.”
