Camila Davis wished she could just disappear into the floor.
Seriously, what was her friend even saying?
She tried to tug Sarah behind her before she could blurt out anything else, but it was too late. Sarah Brown was already going on, “Hey, this pattern on the dress looks really familiar… kinda like the one you were wearing earlier, Camila…”
Suddenly, she seemed to put two and two together, eyes wide with realization. “Wait, are you drawing Camila, Mr. Williams?”
Camila nearly groaned and wanted to clamp a hand over Sarah’s mouth.
But Dennis Williams looked completely unruffled. “Yeah, I happened to see her and got inspired to sketch. It’s not finished yet—just about halfway there.”
He glanced at Camila. “You don’t mind, do you?”
“Not at all,” Camila replied, shaking her head, trying her best to look cool and unbothered.
Sarah, completely oblivious to her own faux pas, immediately started gushing, “Why would she mind? Mr. Williams, this is amazing! No wonder it looked so familiar… Even with just the outline, you’ve totally captured her spirit. When you finish, it’ll be a masterpiece for sure!”
Dennis took the praise in stride. “You’re too kind.”
Then he added, “Give me a moment.”
He picked up his pencil and quickly began adding a few lines, shading in some unfinished spots on the canvas.
In about ten minutes, the portrait came to life.
This time, it was obvious without needing to squint—he’d drawn Camila.
She was depicted in a stunning vintage red cocktail dress with a white faux-fur wrap, looking every bit the dazzling beauty. Her features were so lifelike and expressive, it was hard to look away. She was like a blooming rose against a snowy backdrop—the kind of beauty that made you forget everything else.
Sarah was floored. “Wow! This is as good as a photograph—no, actually, it’s even better! It’s got so much more soul!”
Even though she knew her best friend was gorgeous, somehow, the portrait made her look even more striking. It was as if the artist had captured every one of her best qualities and dialed them up to eleven.
Camila loved it, too.
He really had done a fantastic job.
Dennis noticed the sparkle in her eyes. “Your current look is great, too. Want me to draw another?”
“Wouldn’t that be too much of a bother?” Camila hesitated, a little shy.
“Not at all,” Dennis said with a shake of his head. Then he turned to Sarah, “Ms. Brown, would you like to be in it, too? I could do a double portrait.”
“Me? Really? Sure! Thank you, Mr. Williams!” Sarah didn’t hesitate for a second. She grabbed Camila and dragged her over to the bench in the gazebo.
Dennis sat down and got right to work.
This time, he took his time—so much so that Camila’s muscles were starting to cramp before he finally said, “All done.”
