Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 248

Mary smiled softly. “Sure, it’s a bit of a shame, but I think it’s worth it. My mom always taught me to be grateful for what people do for us.”

“You helped my family, and I’ll never forget that.”

Camila Davis was genuinely moved by her words.

This kid wasn’t just down-to-earth and grateful—she was honestly likable, too.

Camila made up her mind on the spot. “Alright, since you refuse to take money, let me offer you something else. I started a new research institute a little while back—we could really use someone like you at the front desk. You’d help out as my assistant when things are slow, and you’d get to learn a bit about medicine along the way.”

“I heard you went to college for pre-med, but had to drop out because of family stuff, right?”

Mary nodded, a little embarrassed. “Yeah, that’s right.”

“Well, you’ve got the basics covered, so picking things back up shouldn’t be too hard. If you show promise, maybe we’ll move you up to a better position down the line. What do you think?”

Mary’s eyes lit up. “Absolutely! Being a doctor was always my dream, but life just got in the way. If I get to learn from you, I’ll give it my all. I’ll start studying again too—I promise I’ll make myself useful.”

Camila grinned. “I like your spirit. In that case, let’s head over to the institute so you can get started with HR. And don’t worry—your salary here will be just as good as what you got working for the Smiths.”

Mary’s face broke into a huge smile. “Thank you, ma’am!”

Camila waved her off. “No more of that ‘ma’am’ stuff. Call me Camila, okay?”

“Okay, Camila,” Mary replied, her cheeks a little pink.

Without lingering in the coffee shop, the two of them left straight for the research institute. Camila called up HR and had them handle Mary’s onboarding. With that sorted, Camila headed back into her lab.

Her latest breakthrough—a new miracle drug—was almost ready. But before it could hit the market, it had to pass round after round of safety tests: side effects, double-blind studies, the whole nine yards.

The days flew by in a blur of work. Two weeks passed in what felt like a heartbeat.

Finally, Camila finished development on the new medication. Walter Wilson, the PR guy, got busy prepping for launch. He even lined up some big names to endorse and test the drug, hoping for a splashy debut.

“If this works, it’ll be the best commercial we could ask for,” Walter said, practically buzzing with excitement. “This is your first big win since coming back!”

But Camila didn’t really care about fame. All that mattered to her was helping as many people as possible.
