Camila Davis drifted somewhere between sleep and consciousness, her mind foggy, when she heard a voice nearby. She blinked, squinting, and looked up—only then realizing someone had appeared right in front of her.
The face was familiar. Handsome, strikingly so, and just inches away. His eyes, usually as cold and distant as a winter’s night, now seemed soft, almost gentle—nothing like the aloof man she’d met before.
He was still dressed in his perfectly tailored suit, the kind that looked like it belonged on the cover of GQ. Up close, he was even more impressive—confident, commanding, with an air of quiet power.
But for the first time, he didn’t feel so out of reach—he wasn’t the distant man at the top of the world anymore.
Maybe it was the fever making her loopy, or the way her body felt achy and heavy, but Camila reached out, almost without thinking, and brushed her fingers across his cheek.
Her fingertips burned with heat, her voice soft and muzzy as she mumbled, “You look… way better up close.”
Dennis Williams froze, clearly surprised by her sudden touch.
That kind of contact—well, it was way more intimate than anything they’d ever shared.
Camila was always so careful, always kept her distance.
But as Dennis gathered himself, something clicked in his mind. He frowned, gently reaching for her hand.
Her skin was burning.
He pressed the back of his hand to her forehead—yep, she was practically on fire.
“You… you’ve got a fever,” he said, his voice tight with worry. He moved closer, steadying her. “Can you stand?”
Camila wobbled, her legs like jelly, but the stubborn part of her made her nod. “I can…”
She barely got the word out before her knees buckled. The world spun, everything went dark, and she collapsed right into his arms.
Dennis caught her easily.
She slumped against his chest, burning up, her breath shallow and quick, cheeks flushed an unnatural red. Eyebrows drawn tight in pain, she looked miserable.
His heart hammered in his chest—he hugged her closer, calling out, “Aaron, get the car, now!”
Aaron didn’t hesitate, sprinting off.
