Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 290

The man stood in the middle of a spacious backyard, the warm glow from the house behind him spilling out onto the patio. The place was alive with twinkling fairy lights, laughter, and the gentle hum of conversation, but none of it could quite match his presence.

He was handsome—almost strikingly so—and under the crisp winter sky, he seemed even more refined, almost untouchable.

Camila Davis felt a surprising calm settle over her, a soft smile curving her lips.

She said, “Mr. Williams, let me show you the fireworks.”

Dennis Williams raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smirk tugging at his mouth. “Lead the way.”

By the time she spoke, Camila had already stepped outside and found Lillian and her parents.

Just then, her little girl was clutching two brand new sparklers, surrounded by a small crowd of neighborhood kids. Even Lightning, their golden retriever, was trotting around with a glow stick in his mouth.

Camila quickly flipped the phone’s camera to show the scene.

Dennis watched the screen as Camila’s babygirl lit up with joy, her cheeks rosy from the cold and excitement.

Camila confessed, “I kind of tricked you—no real fireworks. The HOA doesn’t allow them. We’ve just got these sparklers.”

Dennis’s voice was gentle. “That’s okay. Sparklers are pretty great too.”

She grinned. “Want to say hi to Lillian? She’s been talking about you all day.”

“Absolutely,” Dennis replied without hesitation.

Camila walked over, calling, “Lillian, look who’s on the phone!”

Lillian looked up, her eyes going wide when she saw Dennis’s face on the screen. “Uncle Dennis! Happy New Year!” she squealed.

Dennis’s expression softened. “Happy New Year, Lillian.”

Lillian bobbed her little head, scooting closer to the camera. “When are you coming to see me, Uncle?”

“In a few days,” Dennis promised.
