Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 300

When Jordan Smith brought it up, his face turned stormy, anger simmering just beneath the surface.

He’d never been played like this before—certainly not to the point where he’d lost everything.

This wasn’t something he could keep negotiating about. If he tried to dig deeper or get involved in any kind of new investigation, all the details about how he’d pulled Sandra Taylor out of that mess would get dragged up again. And if that happened, a lot more people would get caught in the crossfire.

No, this needed to be shut down, fast.

He drew in a long breath, jaw clenched so tight it hurt. Finally, after a long pause, he ground out, “Ten million. Give it to them.”

Nathan Gates stiffened, immediately nodding. “Yes, sir. I’ll handle it.”

He hurried off to get it done.

Nathan had barely left when Sandra Taylor showed up. She looked as heartbreakingly fragile as ever, eyes red and puffy, with that I-just-cried-in-the-rain look. If you looked close, you could see the outline of a handprint on her cheek.

She made a beeline for Jordan, voice trembling as she pleaded, “Jordan, what do we do now? The press won’t let go of the Taylor Group story, and things are spiraling out of control. Can’t you help the Taylors? With the Smith Group’s clout, you could fix this, right?”

A year ago, Jordan would have caved in an instant.

But now, with anger still burning in his chest, he didn’t feel any of that old affection. In fact, all he felt was a bone-deep irritation.

He pulled his hand away from her and said coolly, “Sandra, if you really cared, you wouldn’t be asking me for this right now. The Smith Group already took a serious hit getting you out. The shareholders are furious. If I help the Taylors again, do you want me to get pushed out myself?”

His voice was sharp as broken glass.

Sandra flinched, finally realizing she’d been taking his support for granted. He’d saved her, sure, but that didn’t mean he could risk everything.
