Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 313

When she headed back to the apartment, Camila Davis was running on autopilot, barely aware of anything except following Dennis Williams’ lead.

Dennis was right beside her, saying something, but it all went in one ear and out the other. She was so zoned out, she didn’t catch a single word.

It wasn’t until she stumbled up the front steps, almost tripping, that she snapped back to reality.

“You alright?” Dennis caught her by the elbow, his handsome face looking genuinely concerned.

Camila, still a little shaken, nodded. “I’m… yeah, I’m fine.”

She rubbed her temples, trying to clear her head. “Sorry, I’m just exhausted. I totally missed whatever you were saying.”

Dennis could see the fatigue written all over her. She’d looked out of it the whole walk back—clearly wiped out.

He felt a pang of guilt. “Really, I should be the one apologizing. If I hadn’t asked you to come out here, you wouldn’t be this beat.”

Camila shook her head, waving it off. “It’s fine. Sure, it was rough, but hey, we made it through, right?”

Only then did she realize they were already inside. The room was simple—barebones, really: an iron bed, a wooden desk and chair, a wardrobe. But everything was neat and spotless.

She glanced around and asked, “So, I’m staying here tonight?”

Dennis nodded. “It’s not the Ritz, but the sheets are all brand new, and I had them washed. Hope that’s okay.”

Camila took a look at the bed—blankets folded military-style, the mattress piled with extra padding so it looked thick and cozy.

She wasn’t the fussy type, and honestly, she was way too tired to care. She dropped onto the bed and grinned, “Are you kidding? This is perfect. Feels soft as a cloud. I’m probably gonna pass out the second I lie down.”

Out by the door, Aaron couldn’t help but think: Of course it’s soft—Mr. Williams made sure of it!
