It was just after 3 a.m. The world outside lay silent, only the icy wind rattling the windows.
Camila Davis had planned on a quick trip out and back—no fuss. But the second she stepped out, she nearly jumped out of her skin. Two figures, both broad-shouldered and dressed in black suits, stood posted right by the door.
They looked like a pair of bouncers outside a nightclub. When they saw her, both snapped to attention. “Ms. Davis,” they greeted, polite but way too serious for this hour.
Camila pressed a hand to her chest, trying to steady her heartbeat. “Jeez, you guys scared the life out of me! Don’t you ever sleep? Why are you lurking out here in the middle of the night?”
The taller one blinked, then rushed to explain, “Sorry, ma’am. Mr. Williams asked us to keep an eye out for you. He was worried you might wake up and need something... Are you looking for someone? Need anything? Just let us know.”
Oh. So Dennis Williams had put them here?
A little warmth crept into her heart, but seriously—she was not about to let two strange guys help with this.
“It’s fine. I just need to grab something myself, thanks.”
The other bodyguard shook his head, looking genuinely concerned. “It’s freezing, Ms. Davis. You’ve been up for over twenty-four hours. If you go out now, you’ll catch your death of cold. Please, let us take care of it.”
Camila tugged her fleece hoodie tighter around her. “No, really. I’m good. I can handle it.”
The bodyguards exchanged a look—clearly torn. Orders were orders, and if they let her wander off, they’d probably be in hot water come morning.
Before anyone could argue more, the door to the room next door swung open. Heavy footsteps approached, calm and steady.
Camila turned—and there was Dennis Williams himself, looking like he’d just been dragged out of a much-needed nap. His usually sharp features were clouded over with sleep and just the tiniest hint of annoyance. “What’s all this noise?”
If the bodyguards had tails, they’d be wagging. “Mr. Williams, Ms. Davis woke up. She wants to go out, but she won’t let us help her!”
