Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 326

Just as Camila Davis wrapped up her day, her phone buzzed with a text from Dennis Williams: “You okay being on your own?”

The simple message warmed her heart. She took the chance to mention that her best friend was back in town, too.

Knowing someone was there to look after her, Dennis sounded a little less worried. “Alright, see you at the Spring Carnival. I’ll have the next phase of Lillian’s treatment plan ready by then. We can go over it together.”

Camila perked up at that. “Sounds good. Thanks for all your hard work, Mr. Williams.”

“Not a problem. Get some rest. Goodnight.”

The next two days, Camila stayed home to recover, but she didn’t exactly take it easy.

The lab had officially reopened just a couple days ago.

She used the downtime to organize all the research she’d gathered and sent it off to her team. She also mapped out a new strategy for their next project.

Walter Wilson stopped by, arms loaded with fresh oranges, berries, and a basket of gourmet snacks. “How’d you manage to come back banged up after being away just a few days? If it’s that dangerous, maybe you should skip these trips. The Smith Group wants to expand, sure, but not at the cost of your neck.”

To Walter, Camila’s safety came way before business networking.

Camila grinned, “Come on, there wasn’t any real danger. I just took a wrong step on a ladder and fell. The army base is probably the safest place around!”

Walter looked her over, then nodded, satisfied she was telling the truth.

She changed the subject, “So, anything crazy happen at Smith Group while I was gone?”

Before she’d left, tensions with the Taylor Group were all over the place. Now? Everything seemed oddly quiet.

Walter seemed to know what she was getting at and didn’t bother to sugarcoat it. “Smith Group’s fine. Before you left, they’d already decided to let things go. They paid out the settlement, kept things low-key, and buried the news. It’s blown over.

As for Taylor Group, pretty much as we expected—they’re done. Almost bankrupt. Still, Jordan Smith couldn’t cut his girlfriend off completely, so he left her a little something to land on. Not that it’s worth much.

Best news is Sandra Taylor’s basically persona non grata now. Even at Smith Group, nobody wants her around.”

“That’s putting it mildly,” Sarah Brown chimed in, walking in with a bowl of freshly washed grapes. “A friend of mine says Barbara Jones is already scouting for a new ‘Mrs. Camila’ replacement!

Back when the Taylor family was riding high, and Sandra was putting on airs, she had the Smiths eating out of her hand. Now the Taylor Group’s tanked, and after all that mess Sandra caused, the Smiths are finally seeing through her act.

I bet she’s freaking out, scared she’ll get dumped and kicked out of the family any day now…”
